As I walk into my new school, I realize how big it is compared to my old school. Granted, my old school was rather small and a private school. I may just be overreacting, but this one is a pretty big school.
This school was my only option from the choices I was given. I didn't want to move, but it wasn't really my choice, my father was in the military and we moved almost every year. I became used to it. I'm a seventeen year old girl who can't really complain about our moving situation, they wouldn't just listen to me and stay in one place.
My little brother right beside me, holding my hand and looking around with excitement and curiosity. Elwin is only seven. I know what you're thinking, a seven year old in highschool? Yes, Elwin is seven and is a freshman.
Elwin is abruptly to smart for his age. We figured that out when he scored big on his tests for school. The teachers were shocked and hurriedly called our parents, along with the Board of our school, to tell them he was a genius. This happened in fourth grade, they bumped him up to eighth grade and now he's coming with me to highschool. I don't mind it, but people can be very judgemental and might bully him.
He jumped up and down with excitement, "Athena, you think it will be fun?"
"I don't know, Elwin. This is a new school, we can't be to quick to judge it." I say sternly.
"Who said anything about judging?" He questioned.
"No one is judging, I'm just stating." I say.
He nods his head and let's go of my hand, running and exploring the hallways of this new school. Pictures of art, nature, and different types of clubs are littered across the walls. Girls and boys are running around the halls, meeting up with their friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, and loved ones. They embrace one another with hugs and kisses to the cheek, making me smile and continue walking.
Elwin climbs onto one of the seats, that are against the wall, getting a better look at all the papers. He continues walking along, getting to the very end of the seat, his shoes leaving containments of dirt and nature. His hands run across the papers, his eyes closing and his nose sucking in a harsh breath.
"I think we'll like this school." He says while opening his eyes.
"Yeah?" I ask while walking over to him, before hearing a large, loud, and rude voice directed toward us.
"Hey, little boy, get your feet off, this isn't your house." The large man says while walking over to us.
He's wearing a uniform with the school logo on it. His shorts hanging on his waist, stopping at the knees. His shirt tucked in, with the buttons unbuttoned half way. A hat on his head, backwards. He has a walkie-talkie clipped to his belt, a earpiece traveling up from the base of the technology and into his ear.
"I'm so sorry, sir. It won't happen again." Elwin says while still standing on the seat, making me roll my eyes and pull him off.
"We're so sorry, sir." I say while putting Elwin down and fixing his attire.
The man looks at Elwin with a mean glare, his eyes travel down his face and onto his neck, making him stop at the article hanging loose around him. "You're going to school here?" He asks while pointing to the I.D.
"Yes, sir." Elwin says while reaching his hand out for him to shake, making the guy step back in shock but quickly draws his hand out for him to shake.
"Well, what is a little guy like you doing in a highschool?" The man asks while shaking Elwins hand.
"Ehh, I scored big on my tests for school. They bumped me up a couple of grades and now I'm in highschool. Can you believe that?" Elwin explains while still shaking the guys hand, making him smile.
"Lucky you. I'm Aaden." Aaden says while offering his hand to me, making me smile and shake his hand.
"I'm Athena," I say while putting my hand on my chest, "And this is Elwin." I say while putting my other hand on Elwins back.
"Nice to meet you guys. Where you off to?" Aaden asks.
"We need to go to the registration office to get our schedules." Elwin says while grabbing my hand.
"Ok, come find me if you need any help, I'll always be in the 400 building." Aaden says while walking away.
"What does he mean by the 400 building?" Elwin whispers to me while looking confused.
"I don't know, let's go find out." I say while walking out of the main building and out into the open space that is the cafeteria.
Elwins grip on my hand tightens once he sees all the girls and boys crowded around the space. I pull him closer to me, making sure he doesn't get lost in the sea of students.
Students are all over the place, reading books, eating food, doing homework, or sucking face with their partner, making me cover Elwins eyes and face him towards another direction. He bats my hand away and looks all over, shocked at the amount of students.
"So many humans" He whispers while starting to walk.
"This is highschool, Elwin. More is yet to come." I say, making him nod his head and look at all the students.
Tabels are stationed everywhere, kids sitting or laying on them. Each table has different genres of people. Some younger, some older, some black, some white, some Hispanic, some Cuban, some short and some tall, I smile at the thought of diversity. This school has so many nationalities, it's so welcoming and loving.
I look to my right and see a lot of girls sitting along the tabels. Some are gossiping and laughing. Some are fixing their hair or makeup. Some are reading books or doing school work, majority are on their phones and taking selfie's. My eyes spot this one girl, she's laying across the seat and has her bag underneath her and the upper half of her back against the wall. She has a book in her hand, To Kill A Mockingbird. Her hair is in a loose bun, with pieces of hair framing her face. She sits up and starts talking to the girls around her, making them laugh out loud and clench their stomachs. Before I can tear my eyes away from the small group, her eyes meet mine and she lifts her hand up and gives me a small wave while smiling. I wave back at her with politeness, but with curiosity coursing through my brain as to why she would wave at me.
"Come on, let's go." Elwin says while pulling at my hand, making me take my eyes away from the small group of girls.
Boy, I hope I don't have to talk to people. I'll get all nervous and stutter.
