Dark Love

Prologue

  

      "What the hell is your problem Ember?" Dvina scowled, rubbing her bruised cheek, the cheek that I had just punched.

         "For once you couldn't just stay out of my love life, you just had to stick your slutty little nose in it!" I growled, my fingernails turning into claws.

        "Oh, don't act like you cared for that stupid boy, you weren't ever going to take his soul. I knew it from the moment I met him, from then on I knew he would be your downfall," she sneered, her hands lighting up with blue shadows.

         "I should kill you where you stand," I snapped, my red shadows dancing in my hands.

        "Ah, I wouldn't threaten me if I were you, not when I have your precious human so close to his death?" Dvina mocked.

        "What are you talking about?" I snapped, furious at her antics.

        "Oh cousin, you didn't really think I'd come here without insurance did you?"

            Before I could answer, Dvina turned to the woods behind her, and out from the darkness came Kaiden. I stared in horror as he limped forward, finally coming to a stop beside Dvina. Blood was all over him, his chest raked with claw marks.

         "What did you do to him!?" I growled, almost launching myself at my cousin.

         "You weren't supposed to fall in love with him, you broke the rules. I had to find a way to stop Auntie from sending you back to Hell, so I had Ash help." she smirked, stepping to the side.

        From behind her, Ash emerged, angelically handsome.

        I stared, shock coursing through me as my blood began to boil.

        "What is she babbling about Ash, please tell me it's not true? Tell me you tried to save him and that you had nothing to do with cursing him, tell me!" I gasped.

        Ash gazed at me, his beautiful ice blue eyes piercing my very soul.

        "From the first day Lucifer assigned me to watch over you, I knew you would be more powerful than any of the demons of your kind. I saw it at the party, the way you convinced those boys to fight each other, the raw ability that you exuded, I knew then that you were my mate. But in came Kaiden Smith, and everything your aunt had instilled in you fell away. I noticed you becoming more aware and nicer to the humans. It was ridiculous, I thought you had lost your mind, but then I realized it was that boy...you were falling for him." "So I took your cousin up on her offer, if we could get Kaiden out of the way, you would be mine, and Dvina could rise to power with you and I at her side. We would be invincible. All we had to do was get the boy to make a deal with your father, and the rest would follow."

        I could feel my heart breaking into a million pieces. How could I have been so naive, so oblivious to Ash's charms? He had just wanted to possess me all along.

         I could feel the rage inside of me building, but before I could utter a word, Ash was in front of me, gripping my arm.

        "Let me go before I ignore any ounce of compassion I have, and rip your throat out," I growled, sounding like a caged animal.

        I tried to yank my arm away, but he held fast.

        "Look at me Ember," Ash's soothing voice commanded.

        I knew that if I looked into his eyes I would be instantly trapped in his compulsion.

        "You honestly think that I'm going to fall for that, sod off Ash," I snapped, instantly closing my eyes.

        "Look. At. Me," he commanded.

        I felt the compulsion weighing down on me. I tried my hardest to ignore it, as painful as ignoring it was.

        "Why make this difficult cousin, all you have to do is just let go," came Dvina's sinister giggle.

         "No," I growled, tugging at my arm again.

         "Open your eyes, and look at me Ember," Ash commanded with force.

        This time I couldn't fight his compulsion, it was too strong. My eyes met his, my mind consumed by his icy gaze.

        "You will not fight me, you will listen and do every command I say, you will love me with all that you have, but most of all, Kaiden Smith will mean nothing to you."

         My heart screamed no, but my mind said yes. I was doomed and looking at Kaiden, there was nothing that I could do to save him.
