And I found love where it wasn't supposed to be
Right in front of me
Talk some sense to me

Zelda didn't know what drew her to the place.

It hadn't been on their route, nor had either of them given it much thought. Actually, it was a place that Zelda tried to actively forget. She couldn't speak for Link but, considering he had all but died here, she couldn't imagine it being a pleasant place to remember for him, either.

They had passed it on their journey across Hyrule, focused on rebuilding, and being in the proximity had cause her to bring her horse to a standstill. She couldn't tear her eyes away, not even when she sensed Link coming to a stop beside her, slight worry radiating from his body.

She had to smile at that. She and Link were so attuned to each other now that they were able to sense how the other person was feeling just by being near.

She had nudged her horse forward, and though undoubtedly confused, Link had followed without hesitation.

Now she stood in the battlefield she and Link had stood in all those years ago, when he almost died in his effort to protect her. There was nothing left in the clearing but carcasses of old Guardians, withered away from the pillaging of others for parts. Long untrodden, grass and mess had become overgrown, wrapping around the old bodies so nature and machine was starting to entwine. It hardly looked like the site of a battle – more like a forgotten graveyard.

But Zelda could see beyond what was left behind. Her brain tore away the new, leaving the battleground of that day before her.

Zelda surveyed the battlefield, making herself remember. She made herself remember the numerous Guardians, swarming around them, and how Link had so desperately attempted to fight them all off. How he stood before her, obviously wounded, but refused her pleas to save himself because she was so focused on her. She made herself remember the panic that seized her bones when Link refused to flee, but stood up to the final Guardian even though he was in no state to fight...

She made herself remember that moment when she realised, suddenly, that there was no way she could watch Link die. When she ran forward to shield him, finally calling upon her power to protect him.
