Maddison rubbed her half opened eyes. The day had gone by so sluggishly. It was over 80 degrees and the students of South Whidbey were cooped up inside the school like caged hamsters.
It was the last period of the day, sixth. Spanish. A news cast coming in from Spain was playing on the smart board, subtitles shot by just below the reporter, and Maddison had no intention of paying attention. She looked over at her five friends who all happened to sit in the same group as her. This was the only period where they had a class together, so this time was cherished.
Next to Maddison sat Shae, a tall brunette with large blue eyes. His head was propped up on his wrist and he was staring at the smart board trying to keep awake. He was skinny and agile, but doesn't play any sports, he's also a vegetarian. Shae is smart, cunning, and rude from time to time. He always had a way of making her laugh, and to him she did the same. Shae is hard to connect with sometimes, Maddison had noticed throughout the years, but this didn't stop them from growing closer. Shae sighed deeply and rubbed his eyes, tired.
Next to Shae sat Izabell, with long brown hair and green eyes. Her hair was draped over her left shoulder and in her hand was a colored pencil. Izabell, was multi-talented you could say. A artist, writer, painter, singer, shes the whole package. A fast thinker as well. Izabell and Maddison had grown extremely close over the years, talking about Dungeons and Dragons, Anime, boys, video games and theater. Izabell second guesses herself to much, thought Maddison, as she chewed on her pencil.
Maddison's eyes wandered over to Ann, the girl with short blonde hair leaning on Izabell who was finishing up her art homework. Ann's head bobbled from side to side every now and then her mouth half way open, trying to stabilize her head on Izabell's bony shoulder. Oh Ann, how I love you, Maddison giggled to herself. Ann was loud, good at math and an EXTREMELY fast talker. She rides horses, which is amusing to Maddison because Ann would come to school every now and then complaining about her aching knee's and thighs. Maddison had suggested many times to give up horses, but Ann always refused. To her it was like a drug.
Of course, staring intently at the screen was Phalen, his angular face rested on both of his skinny palms and he was following the English subtitles, just as Mr. Newton had told us to do. Maddison loved Phalen because he was one with nature. Not deathly afraid of spiders like herself and Ann, but welcomed them into his home, you could say. He loved animals and stars and swimming in Goss Lake in the summertime. She always enjoyed hanging out with him and going on wacky adventures. Book crazy, speed reader, hilarious sense of humor, but so timid; all of this was Phalen.
The next thing Maddison saw was a pair of feet kicked up onto the desk."Laine," Mr. Newton warned, looking up from his book for a split second, "get your feet of the desk and pay attention."
A grunt of resentment and then the feet thudded to the floor and Laine propped up his elbow on the desk and shot Maddison a wink, she rolled her eyes and smirked. He ruffled his curly blonde hair and began to watch the live broadcast from Spain. Laine is new to South Whidbey but was the missing puzzle piece the friend group needed. He is always the first to make innuendos, puns, inappropriate jokes, and is currently the only non-virgin in the group. Maddison and Laine met through Izabell when they became friends in their first period. Now they all had Sixth period together which made it basically a living hell for the teacher.
Maddison sat back in her chair and crossed her arms. Her eyes glanced to the clock and sighed. Another full hour until the weekend and the sleepover the six had planned. A movie night with an assortment of treats and soda. Maddison was mid height with curly red hair and dark brown eyes. She was the only one in her friend group with dark eyes, and she loved how it made her feel mysterious.
