Phalen's legs felt heavier and heavier with each step he took towards the door. Even though the lobby was crowded and loud, the only thing he could hear clearly were his breaths. Quite, calm, even breaths.

One, two, three steps, until he wrapped his thin hands around the handle of the heavy iron door.

One, two steps

One

"Phalen!" Shae yelled. His voice echoed across the hall, Phalen turned around to see the security guard standing less than a foot away from his feet. Phalen looked up at the tall man, then around his wide stomach, but no one was there.

The lobby was suddenly empty. No sounds of eager footsteps bounced off the chilled concrete walls. The grey tiled floor no longer held life. In through the sturdy Plexiglas scratched up windows came breaking sunlight through the clouds. As soon as Phalen tore his eye's from the guard, he was no longer there.

"Shae?" Phalen let out the cautious question, which echoed off the walls  and disappeared with the hundreds of people. Phalen stood petrified.

"Hello. Welcome to the EXAMINATION." boomed a voice.

"Well Hello there, inhuman voice-"

"Please remain silent until spoken directly too." The woman's voice said in a monotone. Like reading from a script.

Phalen fidgeted, tapping his fingers together, as he stood in silence for the next seconds. His brain wandered off.

"Welcome Phalen Eisenbrey. Sixteen years of age. Parents deceased."

"Thanks for reminding me," He whispered to himself.

The walls melted away, and Phalen stood in the middle of a large white room with a small dentist like TV tray of items. He walked slowly towards them. He saw a small container of dental floss, three whistles and a piece of broken glass.

"Please select one."

"What?" Phalen murmured, he ran his hand across the sharp edge of the glass, he pulled back as it cut a small fissure into the skin of the index finger.

"15 seconds remaining."

"Shit!"

"Please remain silent until spoken directly too."

Phalen groaned and grabbed the dental floss, quickly ripping it out of the rectangular container, and around both index fingers, he prepared, as if he were about to floss.

The tray folded into the ground.

"Please prepare yourself to kill a human infected with the virus drug known as  Anti-Domusus or popularly known as Anti-Living."

Phalen hiccuped, "Wait-"

Phalen heard dragging footsteps, rather near the the left side of his body. He turned to his right and saw the creature. Absolutely terrifying. He had seen one from a distance but this up close, the foaming mouth, the full beady black eyes. The random mumbles and tweaking limbs. Phalen's eyes burned with hot tears.

"Please. No."

The creature hobbled towards him, it mumbled with every step it took, dried blood etched into its skin.  The creature was speaking to him. Under its breath is was saying something. Phalen could distinctly make it out with his bat like hearing.

Not meant. Don't want to. Empty. Cold.

It muttered this incantation subtly, over and over. Repeating it. Phalen gathered what strength he had, and ran, screaming, holding the floss in front of him like a trip wire. He wrapped it around the neck of the creature.
