As I arrived, I could see the courtiers whisper. Some looking happy and some looking distressed. But that was not what I was most disappointed about. Henry didn't even come to greet me. But at least I could find comfort in Mary and Elizabeth. Yes, I just said Mary.
Mary and I, we've had our strives and our share of fights and argues but we learned that there is nothing to come out of it and we actually bonded with each other. Well that to the addition that I reconciled her with Henry two years ago.
As I came closer to them, they walked to me, curtsied, addressed me with my title and hugged me... one by one.
"Oh, Elizabeth, Mary.... Look at you, you both look astonishing." I said to them both while smiling genuinely. "Oh you are most kind... It is you who truly deserve that, Your Majesty." Mary replied. "For the thousandth time Mary....Call me Anne!" I raised my voice playfully. "Yes...Your Majesty...." Mary playfully answered. Suddenly Mary looked at me like she was assessing me while I put down Elizabeth from my arms and then out of nowhere said, "Anne, I need to speak with you and Elizabeth....alone." She said emphasizing 'alone' while eyeing the courtiers that was still watching us. Some were looking delighted and some looking like they were waiting for us to finish a display. But ignoring the courtiers, I said to her, "Yes, of course", and led her to my room and locked the door.
"Mary, what is it?" I asked her as she was looking deadly serious yet still with a gleam of excitement in her eyes.
"Your eyes, they sparkle, your skin glistens and you were extremely careful when you put down Elizabeth....." She paused then continue, "Anne are you pregnant?" She asked with a half whisper. She said it with so much happiness yet her eyes were filled with concern. "Yes!" I answered her with excitement which only lasted for a short while when I saw her mortified expression.
"Mary what's wrong.... Is it not good news?" I asked her with concern while carrying Elizabeth in my arms. "Of course it is...." She answered pausing. "Then what is it?" I asked her again cautiously. "Anne, I accidentally heard my father talking with the Lady Jane Seymour the other day...." She answered while trailing off. "And?" I asked curious. "He mentioned something about putting you aside and making her queen...." I clenched my jaw but kept my composure for the sake of Elizabeth and Mary as well. I had a feeling that Mary wasn't finished yet so I told her to continue and she said, "I don't know what you're talking about", while avoiding my gaze.
