I lose Harley and Kiera in the crowd of people as soon as we arrive at the house. I don't bother trying to find them, figuring I'll let them have their fun until they decide if they want me to drive their asses home or not.
"I think I'm going to go and sit on the couch." Alex says, standing beside me. I had almost forgot that he had come with us.
"Suit yourself." I say, shrugging. Alex walks off towards the couch and I find my way towards the kitchen to grab myself a non-alcoholic drink.
I emerge from the kitchen and go into the living room. Luckily for me, there's an unoccupied spot on the couch, right next to nerd boy. I need to find something amusing to do at this party while everyone is off getting drunk, high or laid. Why not tease the geek. I take a seat and a sip of my water.
"You know, I'm surprised that you came here." I comment.
"I'm surprised I'm here too." Alex says. "Parties really aren't my thing."
"Yes, that part was fucking obvious." I laugh. Alex doesn't look like he finds it at all funny. He stands up and adjusts his button up plaid shirt.
"Hey, where are you going?" I ask.
Alex ignores me as he walks away. I don't bother following. He should learn to talk care of himself.
A few hours later, Kiera and Harley are both drunk and on the dancefloor, their bodies grinding against each other unaware that they aren't in time with the rhythm of the song. But they don't seem to care.
I spot Alex walking through the crowd of people that fill the house. He examines each group from a distance. Presumably, he's trying to find someone who is even the slightest bit sober that looks like they would be interested in having a conversation with him about something intelligent. Teasing Alex for that would be fun. There's no one in this house that's either sober, intelligent or interested in a conversation right now.
Standing from the couch, I move over to where Alex is standing. When he sees me getting closer, he keeps walking and I follow.
"Why are you following me? Don't you have something better to do?" Alex turns around and snaps at me over the loud music blasting through the speakers.
"Nope. Not really." I smirk. Sighing, Alex turns back around and continues his walk to the kitchen.
I watch as Alex eyes the empty cups, spilt drinks and bottles of an assortment of alcohol that take up the space on the bench. His face scrunches up in disgust.
He grabs an unopened soda can from the fridge. When he turns around, I pout at him, seeing only one drink in his hand. "Didn't get me one?" I ask, feigning disappointment.
"I'm sure you're capable of getting your own." He smiles at his own smugness and walks past me to go back to the living area. His arm gently brushes mine as he goes, sending tingles up my spine. I try to ignore the sensation as I keep following him around this house.
I know that all Alex wants to do right now is sit down and enjoy his can of raspberry soda but that doesn't seem like much of a possibility considering that the couch is now occupied by a couple lying on top of each other, tongues in each other's throat. Alex turns his face away in disgust.
"Let's go outside." I say, leaning up to his ear. He nods, following me without any complaint.
I don't know why I offered, perhaps it's because I know he doesn't like parties and in a moment of kindness, rare for me, I decide to relieve the anxiousness he feels being here, completely out of his comfort zone.
Pusing our way through the crowd, we make it to the backdoor.I slide it open with one hand while holding the drink I grabbed on our way through the house in the other. Stepping out onto the porch, the cool air hits me and I sigh in relief, glad to be away from the sweaty bodies dancing closely together to some upbeat dance track and the smell of alcohol.
Alex also breathes out a relieved sigh. Neither of us say anything. We just stand in silence.
Why did Alex agree to come to the party if he wasn't going to enjoy himself?
The sound of the door sliding open again distracts me from my thoughts and both Alex and I turn around to see who it is.
"We're going to play a game. You guys should join in." Harley slurs. He's barely able to stand straight, leaning against the door to support himself. He wobbles a bit and the door slides open further. Harley loses his balance and nearly falls to the ground. He quickly stands up.
Entertained by Harley almost falling on his face, Alex laughs. When he notices me turn my head and look at him, he quickly covers it up with a cough.
"Come on." Harley says and stumbles inside. Alex looks over at me, nervous. I shrug at him and follow Harley inside. Alex follows behind me.
The rest of our group is already gathered in the living room. Nate, the most intimidating one, and kind of the leader of our group sits on the couch. His on/off again girlfriend, Ava sits on his lap. Her fishnet dress, if you could ever call it that, riding up, exposing her tan thigh.
Cody, another member of the group and probably the most annoying, although he's decent in the bedroom, sits on the floor beside Kiera. Harley sits down on the floor too and pulls Kiera into his lap. I take a seat next to Cody and Alex sits next to Harley.
"What game should we play?" Cody asks, taking a swig of beer.
"How about good ol' fashioned Truth or Dare?" Kiera suggest eagerly. Is she serious? We're not at some twelve year old's slumber party.
"I'm in." Nate agrees, smirking like he knows a dangerous secret that the rest of us don't.
