» Chapter Two «

I take back what I said. I couldnt leave Maxon. No.

I slowly made my way down the stairs. My feet bringing me to my destination...my brain inactive at the moment.

Plan

I did not see the rest of the girls for the past 2 weeks since that horrid day. Something I havent completely gotten over yet, but I could think about it and not cause a flood, maybe a drizzle.

We have a plan

I opened the familiar doors that led to my heaven on Earth-my sanctuary. I took a deep breathe of the cool breeze as I felt a smile tug on the corners of my lips. If only I could live here instead of the four corners of a place that held my problems.

You need to get up...We have a plan

I made my way towards the stone bench as I took out my day shoes, thankfully Mary gave me flats. I would have tripped on the grass the moment I stepped foot on it.

You love him dont you?

I looked up at the sky and took in its light blue color as I relaxed my shoulders.

"May I cut in?" a soft voice said. It has only been a few minutes. Maxon? I turned my head towards the doors so fast I thought I heard my neck crack, only to be dissapointed.

"You were thinking of someone else?" Queen Amberley said as she made her way towards me as graceful as ever.

Yes I was thinking of your son, who by the way was kissing-and enjoying it-another girl after he told me he would wait for me, after his sweet words, do I believe his words that seem so far off-too good to be true-or do I believe my eyes that saw the truth. I couldnt say that to her, so asked the next thing:

"How did your Selection go?" and then added "Your Majesty"

Queen Amberly didnt say anything for a while. She dusted off imaginary lints and flattened out her slightly puffy light green dress. The sleeves stopped at her elbows and her collar line a little low but not enough to be called seductive. In fact she looked as immaculate as ever. She sat with her back arched straight and her legs were carefully laid at her side, looking every inch a queen. Something I'll never be.

"I fancied my husband...before he became my husband" Queen Amberly said, almost whispering. Turning to her I saw she looked dreamily into space. My mom would have joined the selection if she had not married my father. She said Queen Amberly was princess worthy. "I always dreamt of marrying Clarkson, even when I was 10. My parents thought I had brain damage for having such dreams." The Queen laughed. She looked more relaxed now though her back remained arched-years of practice most probably.

"But I knew my place. I knew my responsibilities as a Four" She laughed when she turned to look at me. She was a Four! One caste higher but she had to work! Being a Four is easier, yes, but you still had to work to get some money.

"You thought I was a Three?" Queen Amberly asked as her laughs thurned to giggles making me smile.

"I'm sorry your Majesty, I didnt mean to offend you" I said seriously. I dont need another of Maxon's parents to hate me.
