I turn slightly in Madd's swivel chair. I look up at Mia, who sat on top of Madd's bed, then down at Madd, who sat cross-legged on the floor to the right of me.
"So you saw this thing too?" Madd asks looking up at Mia.
"Yeah, it showed up outside of my house. It tore up our deck. I'll be honest, I didn't believe you when you first described that thing, but after seeing it, I can agree with you that that things definitely not a bear," Mia rambles.
I lean back in the chair and sigh. "So that's four people who've seen this thing."
I hear Madd ask herself quietly, "Four?"
Oh, you are too cute. I smile slightly and answer, "Yeah. You, me, Mia, and Hannah."
She looks up at me in surprise before smiling and saying,"Oh... Right."
"Oh, you two are too cute!" Mia exclaims.
Madd looks up at her and sighs. "Oh, hush. You have your own relationship to deal with."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean I can't comment on others. Like Brian and his Girlfriend!"
I scowl at the mention of Brian. Maddison always talks about him like he's the best person in the world. They'd probably date if he wasn't dating that Sarah girl.
"He has a girlfriend?" she asks, sounding very surprised. So she didn't know he was dating. That's probably why she hangs around him so much. She looks down at the floor, her face blocked by her hair. Oh no, now she's sad. I slide forward in the chair and reach out to comfort her. Just as I touch her shoulder, I hear her say, "I thought he was gay."
I slide off the chair completely and hit the hardwood floor. I hear Mia start to laugh. I close my eyes and lay on the floor in shock. She thought he was gay. That means... that means she didn't see him as a romantic interest.... But now she might. I feel something poke my arm. I open my eyes to see Madd leaning over me, a smile on her face. So sweet.
"What are you three laughing about?" A new voice asks from the doorway.
I turn my head to see Maddison's mom standing in the doorway with Jay at her side. "Hi, Mrs. Keller."
"Hi Jack, I hope you know you're spending the night in the living room," she states, pushes her short red hair out of her face.
"Yes, Mrs. Keller."
"Good. I hope you guys have fun on your spring break," she says before asking, "You guys aren't leaving until tomorrow morning right?"
"We'll leave when everyone's awake," Madd explains.
Her mom nods before saying goodbye and closing the door. We sit in silence for a bit. I watch as Madd slowly stands up and walks to her desk.
Mia hops off the bed and says, "It was really nice of your mom to let you guys stay here before you head out."
Madd shuffles some papers on her desk and says, "Yeah. It sucks that you won't be able to come with us. At least you get to spend the night with us."
"Yeah! My mom didn't tell me that we'd be leaving for New York until it was too late, so she felt bad and said I could stay the night!" Mia exclaims.
I let out a small chuckle and sit up. So she's not going with us? That means there's going to be only three of us. Sweet, less shit to carry.
I hear Mia walk to the door and ask, "So how are you guys going to pay for everything?"
"Our mom gave Jay a large amount of money to pay for everything," Madd answers quietly.
"What about you?" I ask.
"I've been saving up for awhile so I'll be fine," She says, still talking in a quiet voice.
We hear a knock at the door and it opens. Jay stands in the doorway, looking annoyed as usual.
"Mom said that it's time for you guys to go to bed and that Jack needs to go downstairs."
I stand up and make my way to the door while wishing Madd and Mia goodbye. Jay shuts the door behind me and heads down the hall. I follow behind him slowly. He won't even talk to me now. Seriously, is he that pissed that I talk to his sister? I've been talking to her since the beginning of the year, he knows that right? He stops in front of the stairs and points down towards their living room.
"You'll be staying on the brown couch. I've already put out some blankets and some pillows. I'll be in my room for a little bit, but I'll join you down there for tonight," He explains.
"Kay," I mumble and head down the stairs.
Their living room is fairly big with a large dark blue 'L' shaped sofa in the middle, a smaller brown three seater to the right, and two recliners on the left. All of the chairs pointed towards the large flat screen TV in the middle of the back honey colored wall. The living room connected to the kitchen, which is a lighter cream color and is filled to the brim with fancy cookware and utensils. On top of the big island table sat all of our bags, filled with clothes and other random necessities. I flop on to the smaller brown couch and sigh. For being a part of the higher middle class, Maddison doesn't seem to get spoiled. Or even given much money in general. Her room seems so plain compared to the rest of the house.
