I slow the car down as we reach the road. A soon as we stop, the car behind us honks. Yeah yeah. I'm goin'. I'm goin'.
I turn down the pothole littered road and the car speeds past us.
I see Lucas's hand reach up between the seats, and a skeptical voice asks, "So, you're sure you saw these... 'lights'?"
"Yes! I'm sure of it!" Quinn yells.
Trying to quiet Quinn, Maleri says, "Please don't yell Quinn. We're all sitting in the same car, there's really no need."
"Sorry. But still, I swear to whatever fucked up being there is in the sky, that I saw lights and things on the side of that mountain."
"Seriously?"
I ignore the bickering and draw my attention back to the road. It's been years since we've been gone up this road. The last time would've been around her, like, 14th birthday.
Quinn shoots forward in his seat and says, "We gotta go up through that back trail that she showed us. That old Yellow gate."
"Why?"
"Because it was on the back side of the mountain and that's the only way to get there."
"Are you sure you weren't just hella high?" Lucas chimes once more.
"I wasn't that high! I had only eaten one of those cookies, and they had less than half of the regular amount!"
"Oh my god. But you were fucking high! Why are we even doing this?" Maleri questions.
I slam on the brakes and whip around in my chair, "Can you guys please quiet the fuck down? I can't hear the fucking engine over your bickering! And we are going because Quinn wants us to go. It doesn't matter whether or not he was high if he saw something, we're going to investigate it." Lucas and Maleri go quiet and sit back, looking a little scared. I turn around and sit back into my seat and start up the road again. Thankfully it isn't a busy road, so no one saw that or hit us. A few minutes go past and we reach the gate in silence. I got too angry again, god damn it. I sigh slightly and say, "I'm sorry for yelling, but seriously, what the worst that could happen?"
Lucas says, "Milo, it's fine. You were right we were being too loud."
"Yeah, we're sorry. Let's just get walking," Maleri agrees.
"Yeah."
I shut the Jeep off and hop out of my seat. The other three join me at the front of the car. Hopping over the old yellow gate, we start down the old rocky logging road. It isn't long before we come up upon a split in the road. The left one going down the mountain, and the right one going up the mountain.
"So, Quinn, which way?" Maleri asks, lifting her floral dress, so it doesn't touch the ground.
"Down, the lights were on the side pointing towards Tum Tum, so we have to go down."
"Then down we go."
