Shattered Glass

All the jewellery cases were smashed open, with all the jewellery missing. The shattered glass crunched underfoot as I cautiously entered the building. The sirens were getting closer, and I could see the blue and red light reflecting off the broken glass. I leaned against the door, clutching my hip. I was getting too old.

I quickly walked back out of the shop, looking to see if anyone had seen the incident. Lights were turning on in houses and curtains were being swished open. I put up the hood of my jacket and scrambled across the road. I picked up the huge bag and peered inside. The bright light dazzled my eyes and my face lit up as I gazed fondly at all the jewels inside. Diamonds, emeralds, silver, gold and every other jewel imaginable. I shook my head in disbelief. Just my lucky day! I was as poor as dirt and had been living on the streets for over 6 years, and now I had hundreds of thousands of dollars in my hands. I felt giddy with excitement. I stuck a brooch on the inside of my jacket, and I stuffed the bag under my shirt, which only added to my pot-bellied appearance. I dashed back across the road, only to have the most unfortunate twist of luck.

I stepped in a deep ditch of snow and ice. I fell awkwardly, landing in a way that sent searing pain into my left foot. I screamed in pain and watched the world spin around me. My vision grew black on the edges and I rolled on the floor, in agony. I tried to stand up to get away from this mess. I crawled over to a lamp post. I grabbed the pole and tried to hoist myself up. My knees buckled underneath me. I collapsed on the floor, my ears ringing of sirens.

I opened my jacket and gazed at the jewels. Well, there was an upside to today!

"YOU ARE UNDER ARREST FOR ROBBING THE BIJOUTERIE!"

"WHAT?!" I cried, and my vision turned black.
