ONE MONTH LATER

“We’re moving to Halifax.”

I started choking on my orange juice when I heard my parents tell me over breakfast. Life had finally returned back to normal for me. Normal being I hung out with my friends, school started again, and everything was going well, except that I missed him terribly. Carla never asked questions about him, but I could tell that she was concerned about how I was doing. I silently thanked her for that. I was also thankful that Alberta was not at all like P.E.I., so it was a good distraction from my thoughts of him.

“What? When? Why?” I asked back, after finally coughing out the orange juice I was choking on.

“Two week from now. Your father got promoted at work, and they want him to transfer to the Halifax as soon as possible,” my mother told me, smiling happily. Typical. Be proud of dad, and ruin my last year of high school.

“I’m not moving! It’s my last year of high school! This is so not fair!” I yelled back, furious.

“With the pay raise I’m receiving, we can buy you the car you want,” my father said, turning the page of the newspaper that lay out on the table. “What was it again, BMW, silver, 2 door, standard, miss anything?”

“Yeah, the sun roof. This is bribery!” I yelled.

“Okay, we won’t buy you the car,” my mother said, starting to clear the breakfast dishes.

“No, you will buy it. I also want a patio in my room please and thank you. It’s the least you can do, all things considered,” I replied back.

“We’ll see,” my father said, putting the newspaper away. “Do you need a drive to school?” he asked.

“Nope, Carla is picking me up in 5 minutes.”

“Have a good day at school, and can you please pick up some transfer papers. We need to fill them out as soon as possible,” my mother said as I rushed around getting my bag ready.

“Fine, see you when I get home,” I replied, making sure I had all my stuff, and looking around seeing if there was anything I missed.

I was tying up my converse when my dad came up behind me and slipped his credit card in my hand. “Look, I know this is going to be hard on you, which is why I’m letting you go buy the car today. I already let the school know you and Carla aren’t going to be in, and they’re going to fax the necessary documents to me. Have fun car shopping. I don’t want you spending more than $80 000 if you can avoid it. Have fun today.”

As I ran out the front door, Carla was there in her little gold Toyota. Love Today by Mika was blasting on the radio, and she was grinning. Got to love irony. Wonder how well she was going to take it. We were practically sisters, since she stole my juice in Pre School. As I climbed in, Carla turned down the music, and then we were off to school.

“Hey Sams, what’s new?” she asked.

“Getting my car that I want,” I replied.

“Omigod! You have got to be kidding! Your parents finally broke down and agreed to it? What conditions are attached?”

“Have to move to Halifax in two weeks.”

Carla slammed on the brakes, causing the tires to squeal. Luckily there were no cars around for us to crash into. She turned towards me, and if looks could kill, I’d be burning in Hell. Her blonde hair was stuck to her lip gloss, her brown eyes shooting lasers. Her skin, which was supporting a light tan, was starting to turn red, which happens whenever she gets mad or excited. I knew that she was going to start yelling.
