If you're old (like me), you've probably heard about branding, networking, etc.
Well, recently I was researching the traditional publication process and I learned a few things:
1) Get a social life.
Many authors do their own marketing, so it's important for them to be active socially. This is also something publishers and agents look at when they're considering your manuscript.
2) Get a website, make a logo, and be an official person.
Yes, this means putting your REAL NAME and REAL PHOTO on the internet somewhere, so that agents can take vet you. (I know, I'm uncomfortable too, but it's necessary). In all careers, the more you can establish yourself as a professional, the better your chances of reaching your goals.
So today, I decided to do a little branding. You may have seen some other authors on Wattpad refer to this as a "signature".
My initial idea for the logo was to have a squirrel (representing my personality) look into the surface of a pond and see a reflection–my pen name. It was a good idea... but I spent hours on the water's surface and it still didn't look right.
Next, I thought I could try some photomanipulation. Since the beginning, I've experimented with trying to piece together graphics to get my own dragon. Let me just say... there's a reason why dragons don't exist. They're very difficult to visualize, even with other reference animals.
In the end, I got something I'm really happy with, but it was completely unexpected.

Cool, right? I definitely think so. But is it professional? Definitely not. But hey, I'll save that project for another rainy day *^^*
