“I know”, he said. I was baffled and could not say a word because it was as if I was now the one being betrayed. However, if there was one thing that I had learned by then, it was how nothing is what it seems and nobody is who they say they are.
Suddenly, the most curious and remarkable thing happened. If it weren’t for my doubts I would think it the most beautiful sight. Above there were green and blue ripples in the sky like part of a rainbow visible at night. Though this was where my doubts came in, it wasn’t night and these ripples are only visible at night. So what on earth were they?
“Aveline, you have grown up so fast”, she said while walking around me like a shark circling its prey. I was frozen. My feet were planted to the ground and my eyes began to water and would not blink once. “I remember when you were just a child and you would hold onto my little finger so tightly”, she laughed. She knew me. She knew me from when I was little?
“My mother wouldn’t have let you near me” I told her and to my surprise without my voice shaking.
“Oh, of course not, I snuck in to see the person who would one day make me the happiest person in the world”, she smiled sweetly. I felt a shiver at the very thought of her knowing me since I was a baby and still looking as young as she does. The ripples in the sky began to dance rapidly and transform into a more decisive image. It was a circle inside a circle inside a circle with a sharp point in the middle. I frowned. What was this creation she was bestowing on me? It was as if the sky was vibrating and shaking in fear of itself.
“What are you doing?” I yelled as the sky began to scream and roar. It wanted to make itself known to the world that takes its beauty for granted. We look at the sky and all we see is blue and a bright sun. Even children draw the sky like this on paper; they shade the page in blue and draw a large yellow circle in the corner of the page. What if the sky was something more than what we see? It does so much for us, but do we do for it?
“I’m taking your powers”, she said devotedly as if her whole life was due to this moment. She raised her eyes to the sky and silently asked for its help and guidance. It was as if she was praying to it.
“Stop!” I spun around and saw Oliver storming towards Katell. Katell raised her hand and Oliver was flung to the ground twenty metres away. Dear Oliver, why must he come and make such an attempt to secure a ridiculous triumph in this battle of the skies?
“Fool”, she simply said before returning her attention to the ripples. I didn’t know what to do. Even the Plutoniums felt confused and perhaps even misled. This gave me hope that maybe I could persuade them to support me.
“Kadar, what exactly did she tell you about her plan?” I asked him. He frowned and tried not to speak until the silence beckoned him to voice his answer.
“My Katell said you were in danger of having your powers as the rest of the world will be in time. She said as you learn to use these abilities you will become a threat to everyone and everything around you. The only way to save you is to take your powers”, he explained and turned away again. This was the largest tale I have ever heard and I couldn’t believe Kadar was such a fool to believe it to be truth. Oliver, who had recovered from the earlier blow, was about to throw an energy ball, but I took it from his hands and crushed it before any violence were to begin. No matter how inevitable violence might be, I wanted to avoid it for as long as possible.
“Kadar, think about this: If Katell really believed this, do you think she would have made you go through all the trouble of training me?” I said and he slowly turned around, holding his chin and frowning in deep thought. This ordered even Katell to remove herself from her preparations as there was sudden inexorable doubt in his eyes and Katell could see it.
“Why did we train her if you were to take her powers away?” Kadar asked. Katell was stunned and so was Oliver, Kadar and the rest of the Plutoniums. She stuttered and struggled to form a sentence that would act in her favour.
“Just who the hell are you?!” Kadar yelled in such an informal manner I was greatly taken aback. Katell knew the jig was up and she had no choice but to admit who she was. From all that has happened in my life, the answer to this question was the most interesting and tantalising moment of all.
