“P-please… stop…” Linda Rae could barely utter the words due to the horror and shock that enveloped her mind. She was grounded to the blood-soaked floor because she lost the will and strength to stand. I heard that it is a phenomenon that occurs when fear takes over the body. I have never experienced this.

But Jade said she once did.

Mr. Davis stood in front of the paralyzed woman, pointing his pistol at a slowly and steadily approaching Jade. I believe he thought he was being honourable, shielding her with his wide frame. It was his funding that had gotten her into this situation after all. But his protection mattered little to none. She was to die, and her death was our mission.

“Stop!” Mr. Davis yelled.

“We are of the government! You harm us and the whole country will be after you!” Jade gave him an amused tiny smile as a response to his threat and began to walk towards him.

Because I had taken the first blood that Jade had yearned for so much, I decided to hang back and allow Jade to complete the rest of the mission on her own.

With desperation and rage Robert Davis shot multiple rounds at Jade’s head, which of course she dogged with ease. Robert’s hands were shaking so much that Jade didn’t have to move for some of the shots. I’m sure Robert was a skilled marksman, but he never had the training for a situation like this.

I don’t believe Robert was used to smelling and tasting his comrade’s blood with every breath he took, for there were corpses of scientists and guards all over this lab; on the floor, the sinks, and the shelves. Lifeless bodies were all over. Jade and I made sure to carry out Kane’s orders of inducing Robert’s fear. We had decorated the walls and even the ceiling with blood. The odor of death and iron was so strong, you would think it replaced the oxygen in the air.

Jade now stood face to face with Robert, with his pistol pressed against her chest. In a mocking way she said to him, “Pull the trigger.”He did as he was told, but silence replaced what would have been the sound of a bullet.

As tears began to fill his eyes, Jade went around him and picked Linda up to her feet. Jade gave Linda a kiss on the cheek, which I found quite strange, and forcefully shoved Linda’s face to Robert’s own, leaving only a few centimetres of space between them. In a low mellow tone, Jade delivered the message Kane told us to deliver to Robert. “This is because of you.”

She proceeded to slice off the head of Linda Rae giving Robert a full mask of Linda’s blood, and leaving a few drops on his suit.

Robert proceeded to drop to the ground on his knees, sobbing profusely. Our job was done.

Jade and I began our walk back to the small grass covered hill outside the building where our allies would pick us up. As we were walking to our destination, I got to a point where I felt like my curiosity would kill me if I held it back any longer.

“Umm why did you kiss the female scientist back there? Seems like and odd thing to do to a target.” Like with most things I say, Jade seemed quite amused with my question.

“Oh, what’s so odd about it? Are you jealous?”

“Yes Jade. I’m completely jealous of a dead person. I want to die.”

“Well your wish would be fulfilled if I were to kiss you.”

Her amused smile faded like a setting sun, and the pleasant glow of her eyes turned into a radiance of melancholy, as she said her statement.

Concerned and leaking with curiosity I asked her “What do you mean?”

A small smile returned on her face, but it was cloaked sadness.

“Well the kiss I gave Linda was to secure her fate. Everyone I’ve shown or had affection for dies.”

Her answer felt underwhelming and seemed more like superstition than fact. Unconvinced I asked her, “Do you have scientific data and proof of this?”

“I am the proof,” she said. Not satisfied with her answers I simply shook my head in disbelief.

We were silent from that point on, until we arrived at the van that would take us back to the organization. We greeted our driver, put our equipment in the trunk and hopped in the back of the black van that was warm and welcoming. There was no conversation made on the way back. Jade had fallen asleep on my shoulder and the driver never spoke a word.

I woke Jade up as we got to our destination. And as we got to the part of the hallway that would take us to our separate cells. Jade looked at me straight in the eyes on an angle which allowed me to see every detail of her green irises. She then proceeded to tell me, “Don’t worry Devante. I will never love you.”
