On the night I turned eight years old my mother held me in her arms as we layed on her bed watching some reality TV show that she was obsessed with. We were waiting till the clock struck twelve, so that we could celebrate my new found age. My mother was strocking my hair in a very smoothing way that made me want to fall alseep then and there but something in my stomache hurt, the hurting way that warned you something was about to happen but me being my eight year old self kept thinking that it was just the butterflys from all the excitement but I was wrong.
See at around three years old my father walked out on us, only to never been seen again, excpet for the occasional birthday cards that had some money, which went towards rent if you wanted to know. From my knowledge there was never any family around, an uncle or aunty every now and again but no one stuck, except my mother obviously but having no family around never really bothered me anyway, not until the night of my birthday anyway.
My mother told me many very important things to hold onto; money, skills, advice but nothing really stuck inside my head excluding the very last thing she ever told me. The night of my tenth birthday we stayed awake watching that TV show, laughing and talking the occasial whispers and snores but just before the clock stuck twelve she grabbed my head and made me look at her. She went on about how I was an amazing girl and how she will always be proud of me no matter what, she hugged me and tears built up into her eyes. My mother cried and brushed my hair away, she looked deep into my eyes and the sparkle I had once seen was disapearing and she kissed my cheek. I hugged her back and pulled away, she handed my a present and told me to open it in the morning, I nodded a yes and hugged my mother again. My mother gazed at me and struggled to breathe, she keep her eyes on me as she placed her forehead on mine and took a shakey breathe in.
"Luna, there are so many things that I want to tell you but I don't have much time left, you are an incredibale person and so many people should be lucky to capture your heart and there are so many terrible people out there but you muct know something, something very important and something I need you to remember forever okay" My mother whispered and I nodded in repsonse.
"Luna, there are so many people out that it is hard to keep track of who comes in and out of your life but no matter what you need to remeber that, Kind souls still exist, find them and let them in" My mother finished as tears silled down her cheeks.
My mother cuddled up to me and held onto me very tight, whispering an I love you and a happy birthday, she closed her eyes and just as the clock struck twelve, I whispered an I love you back as I felt my mothers arms go limp around me and as she passed away beside me.
