Zach’s POV:

“Hey, Zach.” Laurie walks in, waking me up.

“Laurie, hi.” I say and she smiles.

“Were you asleep?” She asks.

“They gave me some really strong pills.” I say and she laughs.

“Glad you’re feeling better.” She says and sits next to me.

“Apparently I’ll always have a little hole there.” I tell her and she looks out the window.

“Reminding us how I almost lost you.” She says and I take her hand, trying not to sit up too much.

“But I’m right here. Laurie, how bad was it?” I ask her and she looks at me, tears forming.

“You know those murder mystery shows we watch?” She asks and I nod. “It was that bad.”

“Oh.” I say.

“I really thought I was going to be talking to detectives while they tell me you’re dead.” She says and I want to change the subject.

“Well I’m here. We should plan the wedding.” I say and her face lights up.

“Yes! When you get out of here we are starting plans, even if it’s just how many years from now.”

“Two years from today.” I say and she smiles.

“No, Zach, you need to rest.” She tells me.

“I can do that later. Can’t I talk to you right now?” I beg and she laughs.

“Your family will be over later. And I heard the nurses say you get moved this afternoon, after lunch. I’ll come back tonight to see you, but I have class now.” She kisses me and leaves.

“Well, you just wanted some attention, didn’t you?” I hear and look to the door.

“Alison? How did you find out I was here?” I ask her and she rolls her eyes. I really don't like that my ex has the same name as my fiance's sister.

“Your friends are stupid. They made a post about you being shot, but being alive. This is the only hospital close to you, idiot.” She rolls her eyes.

“Leave me alone.” I say and she cackles.

“Not a chance. Zach, you could still have me back if you want.” She says and I don’t want her back.

“Zach, I forgot my purse. Oh. No.” Laurie is standing in the door.

“Who’s she? Oh, it’s you. Did he not break up with you yet?”

“Alison, leave her alone.”

“I hate you, Zach Porter.” Laurie grabs her purse and runs out.

“Laurie!” I yell after her. “God, Alison, you’ve ruined my life. That was my fiancé!”

“So you do have it in you to settle down.” She leaves and I wait all day for Laurie to come back. I don’t think she will, but then, around six, she walks in. I can tell she’s been crying all day.

“Explain it.” She sits in the chair by the window of my new room.

“Ali read online that I was hurt. She came back to ruin my life, but I won’t let her. I love you, Laurie.” I tell her and she starts crying.

“I knew you wouldn’t cheat on me.” I open my arms and she comes over to me.

“You came in and saw that, you had every reason to assume.”

“Maybe. I love you, Zach.” She says and stays with me until she’s kicked out.
