With a deep breath, she suggested they take the Greyhound to Sacramento. He wasn't sure that was a good idea, and neither was she really. As they were chatting, a large group of over fifty people came to a stop to rest for a bit. They were bicyclists who were biking to Yuba City. Kalila looked around debating on bicycling but thought better of it. That would take too much out of them and if they had a need to fight, that wouldn't be good.
She wasn't wanting to steal yet another car. They were too far to walk still. Jax was watching the people to make sure they weren't being watched or followed. Kalila told her companion she was going to use the restroom. Jax told her to be careful and be quick. After doing her business, she was washing her hands and another woman came out of a stall to wash her hands as well. The woman answered her phone.
"Hey sweetie. Yes, I'm almost done then we can head on to Sacramento. Ok, see you in a few." She stated.
Kalila smiled inwardly.
"Ma'am, you're heading to Sacramento?" Kalila sweetly asked.
"Yes. Why?" She asked.
"If my boyfriend and I gave you gas money, would you let us ride with you?" Kalila asked, giving a sweet smile.
"Let me ask my husband. Come with me." The older woman told her, "I'm Deborah."
"It's nice to meet you, Deborah. I'm Kalila." Kalila introduced herself as they left the bathroom.
They were walking to find Deborah's husband when Kalila nodded towards Jax. He jogged to catch up, wondering what was going on.
"This is my husband Vince. Sweetie, this sweet couple needs a ride to Sacramento and said they'd give us gas money if they could ride with us. What do you think?" Deborah asked her husband.
"Hi! I'm Kalila and this is my boyfriend Jackson. I can give you however much gas money you need if we can hitch a ride with you." Kalila held her hand out for the older man to take.
"Oh, that's ok, sweetie. You can ride with us. We're about ready, are you?" Vince asked
"Yes, Sir, we are." Jax smiled.
The duo slid into the backseat of the car then looked at one another. Jax slid his arm around Kalila's shoulder as Vince got them on the road to Sacramento. The older couple talked about their kids and grandkids making Kalila laugh softly. The ride was over before they knew it. Kalila gave the sweet couple gas money even though Vince was insistent she didn't have to. The group parted ways on good terms.
"Kalila what are we gonna do now?" Jax questioned.
"Well, let's get something to eat and we'll figure it out." She retorted.
They walked from where the couple dropped them off at down the street. Jax was a bit uneasy, worried he might be noticed. The Sons did come to Sacramento from time to time on business. He didn't want to walk into any place that he might be noticed. They found a small little café to get a bite at. They remained silent until after their food arrives.
"How far is it from here to Lodi?" Kalila quietly asked.
"From Sacramento to San Jose is about 126 miles. From San Jose to Charming is another 30." He looked over at his companion.
"So we got 150 miles to go." She sighed, "The last stretch is always the hardest."
"Think it would be safe to take the bus?" Jax quietly asked as she took a bite of her burger.
The door opened up making both immediately look to who had come in. One guy looked familiar so Kalila immediately looked away. The trio looked around the restaurant as they waited to be seated.
