Valeries POV

You got home a little later than usual. Once again, your mum and step dad were gone, off doing whatever. You didn't mind much.

When you were 7, your dad finally left you and your mum. You had taken enough abuse from  him a child. When you were 11, your mum married Ty, and you were content. He was a nice guy, but you started feeling distant from your mum. By the time you were 12, you rarely ever saw your parents. You knew how to do your own laundry, cook like a pro and essentially live on your own. Your parents came home to sleep most nights, but not all. Sometimes you liked the solitude.

You walked to your room, and threw your books on the bed. Your chemistry book fell open, and a small note fell out. Written on it in a green pen were just a couple words and a number.

" +44-1902-186-1898. In case you ever need anything. At all. Liam xx"

You had no idea how the note got in there. All you could think about was how this boy never quite gave up, but was never pushy about it. You knew you would never hear the end of it if you didn't let him know you had gotten his message, so you took out your phone and saved the number. You had no idea what to say to him. Something cheeky? Or cold, how you had been so far. You felt bad abobut your quick, blunt remarks to him.

"You're a sneaky one, Payne. -Val x"

Was that too cheeky? You just called him Payne. Damn, this was way too early for nicknames. You didn't even know his real name until earlier. Besides, he had put "In case you ever need anything." and at the moment you were fine. You pushed away your schoolwork and waited patiently for a reply.

Liams POV

Finally, after waiting for pretty much every second after you slipped the note into her Chem book, your phone buzzed. It was from an unknown number.

Please be her.

Sure enough, the text was signed with "Val". It wasn't anything like you had expected. It was casual. It was funny. It was flirty. She had called you "Payne", which you had to admit, was a pretty bad last name- turned nickname. Still, you were glad she texted you. Now, you had to reply.

Be cheeky, be cheeky, you told yourself.

"ahah :) x"

What? What the fuck. Did you really just respond "ahah :) x" to a girl who had so cleverly texted you. What the hell was wrong with you? You hadn't had much of a problem with girls in the past. Neither you, Andy or Maz had. Now, suddenly, you couldn't even speak.

Before she had a chance to respond, you texted her again.

"So, how are things?"

Again. You fucked up again. Obviously things were awful. You didn't know where her bruises were coming from, but someone had been scarring her beautiful skin. You wanted to know more, but you didn't want to intrude. You knew she had to come to you first.
