A lemniscate amount of strength

NUMB

It was a piercing and numbing Winter- cold July. where It had begun to snow, and the wind danced at its hardest. Icicled dangled from tree skeletons each one as sharp as a sword. The ice reflected the dark cloudy sky. The cool frosty winter wind lifted strands of my hair into the wind and swirled it like ink in water. I waited outside my best friend, Liss's house, it was the familiar shape of warmth and memories, the house sat in isolation in a deep frost of white. Every July, the whole town plays hide and seek on ice and the first person tipped was in for next July. The door busted open and I turned to see Liss and I ran up to her doorstep to give her a heart crunching hug. Weeks crawled by before we were able to meet. We hadn't seen each other for a while because we went to different schools and had been so busy studying. I broke away from her and grinned, she grinned right back. I grabbed her arm and we raced across the slippery reflective ice.

The ice was as smooth and sharp as chunks of colourless glass. It was smooth and cooler than the frosty air, which and it hard to run on without slipping on it. The amount of ice that covered the surface of land was large and irregular. Sure, the ice was slippery, but that was just part of Winter. And the snow was like angels falling from dark skies. Behind us, I saw Megan chasing after us, she was the first one tipped last year so she was in for this year and it sucked to say that she was smart to go for us because thanks to Liss, we were the slowest players. "Liss! We need to hurry!" i threw her the skates and we quickly put them on. " This way!" I shouted, there was a huge hole in the ice that we could jump over, as I was sure Megan wouldn't jump over so we would be safe. I skated quickly and leapt over the hole, ice skating lessons really pay off. I waited for Liss who was on the other side of the gigantic hole. " You can do it!" I cheer. " no! I cant!" she cries. " Just jump!" I clap her on as she skates up towards the hole but at the last moments she slips and I see a glimpse of her face which was as quiet and frozen like the timeless eyes of a statue. She sinks like a stone into the murky water and I panic. Megan has caught up and I yell at her " call the police!" her eyes open in alarm and she nods and skates back to one of the houses. I take my skates off and dive in to the hole.

The icy water hits you like pins. And they continue to press harder. Life flashes in your eyes when you feel pain maybe because its reminding you of what you once had. My brain had begun to shut down and the cold crawled its way into my skin like nails digging deeper and deeper. You lose your view, all that remains is dark nothing. I feel around with my fingers which have gone numb from pain. Time has slowed down, and everything is moving slowly. It was peaceful. I suddenly gripped something in my hand, it felt like clothing, it was Liss! I used all the strength I had left in me which wasn't much, to kick my way to the surface, each kick getting stronger with hope. We resurface and gasp for air. She's alive! I'm alive! We climb out of the water and I lay down besides Liss. We look at the sky and at the bits of snow that covered houses, that lay there, unforgotten like misplaced jewellery. It was a beautiful sight, the sharp smell of wood sliced around us like the edges of the houses. The snow was like leaves falling in Autumn, persistent and ceaseless. We turn to each other and begin to laugh at our misadventure in the snow.
