Chapter Twenty:
Joy Ride

---Harry’s Point of View---
I wanted to tell her that I told the principal about everything, but I didn’t want to do it here at the school in the empty hallways that would soon be filled and flooded with people. I needed a more grounded place since this was exactly the best information for her. I glanced around the white walls that were covered with school spirit posters which reminded me of my old school and I shivered. I suddenly remembered how much I hated it.
As we walked down the long, endless hallway side by side, Evie seemed tense. She was fidgeting with her fingers left and right and bit her lip anxiously. She was so quiet which only added to the echoing silence in the air. I wanted her to feel safe, so I absentmindedly searched for her hand and grasped it tight. She looked up at me then and smiled a little bit. I smiled back at her as I laced her fingers with my own and squeezed her hand tight. We were finally out of the building and I had to let my eyes adjust to the surprising atmosphere change. The bright sun outside was blinding from the previous fluorescent lights of the school.
“Uh, Harry where are we going to go?” Evie started, tugging on my hand. “I carpooled here and you can’t drive, remember?”
I rolled my eyes at her. “You think too much.”
She furrowed her eyebrows at me but I only dragged her towards the car I came in. I pointed to the black Audi that was parked to the side of the road at the top of the large hill of grass. She tilted her head up and spotted it, her face still confused as she said, “But—”
“Relax, Paul’s driving the car,” I interrupted, knowing what she was going to ask. She closed her open mouth and I smirked, shaking my head playfully. I guided her towards the car, as we made our way up the giant hill. Taking large steps, I stumble, almost tripping and falling flat on my face. Evie felt my uneasiness after that almost fall I had and laughed as I tried to regain balance, her hand slipping away from my grip.
“Hey, stop laughing at me!” I yelled with a smile, brushing myself off.
She let another bout of laughter escape as she calmed down, “Okay, okay I’m sorry! Are you all right?” she giggled.
“No,” I answered lightheartedly.
“Harry, you didn’t even really fall,” Evie stated, crossing her arms.
“But who knows? That rock that I hit my foot on could have gone right through my shoe and entered my bloodstream and I could have internal bleeding right now.”
It was her turn to roll her eyes at me as she remarked, “Yeah I’m sure that happened.” She now reached over and grasped my hand just like I had done previously. She flashed me a small smile and I returned it as we hopped into the car.
Once we were both seated in the back, I said, “Hi Paul, can you take us to . . .” I trailed off, and looked and Evie. I didn’t want her to know where I was taking her, so I leaned forward and whispered something in Paul’s ear. He gave me an uneasy look, he always hated when I suggested something risky, he was our security guard after all. But I gave him a hard stare and he nodded, starting the car.
I leaned back in my seat and fastened my seatbelt, turning to Evie. “Where are we going?” she asked, eagerly.
“It’s a surprise.” I smirked with confidence but inside I was really quite anxious.
