I’ll Be Your Reason to be My Love
Chapter Nineteen:
Anywhere But Here

--Evie’s Point of View---
“Exactly what did you think you were doing?!” Mr. Frank’s high pitched voice rang through the whole room when I entered. He was standing up and yelling at Harry who was seating across his desk in the large, leather chair. It smelled like a doctor’s office in here and by the way Mr. Frank stared at me when I shut the door behind me, it felt like one too.
I cleared my throat and Mr. Frank motioned for me to take the seat next to Harry. Uneasily, I slowly moved closer to it and sat down quickly. I looked down at my lap, trying my best to avoid his eye contact.
“Now you both are going to tell me exactly what happened.”
I hated Mr. Frank’s demanding voice; it was actually making me quite mad. I wondered where Derek was, and what the hell our story was going to be. Realizing that this was now a prominent issue, my palms started sweating as I folded my hands. I fiddled my thumbs together, fidgeting left and right.
When Mr. Frank realized that we had both been silent for what seemed like a while, he suddenly broke it by screaming, “Okay well, let’s start off with this. Why did you physically abuse another student? And on your first day too, you are not off to a good start Mr. Styles.”
Harry still didn’t say anything and that’s when he looked to me. It was a little bit of a sympathetic expression mixed in with anxiety. I knew he was actually mentally asking me if he could tell the principal about the entire reason behind his actions. I felt shaky about the whole thing. I still hadn’t found out what mum wanted to talk to me about, and I felt like if she knew about this she would just push it back further in her plans. I knew what she had to talk to me about was important, and I didn’t want this whole situation to get in the way of that.
Instantly, I shook my head no at Harry, but not so subtle that Mr. Frank noticed. Harry bowed his head down, understandingly and turned to the principal. In an awkward voice he said, “Um well . . . basically . . . ehm, I think you should know that I have tourette’s.”
I smacked my head with my hand. Was that the best he could do? I feel like everything is going to go downhill from here.
Mr. Frank widened his eyes; he was probably as shocked as I was at this point. “Oh. I’m . . . I’m so sorry, Mr. Styles. We haven’t received your medical records yet, but you should have told us. Are you all right now?”
I was still in shock myself that Mr. Frank actually believed him.
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine,” he said lowly. He then flashed Mr. Frank a small smile being the cheeky boy that he is.
“Well then, that changes things a bit. But it still doesn’t explain why you were impersonating a French foreign exchange student.” He then pointed a finger at him and resumed his stern tone.
Harry laid back in the chair, becoming more comfortable and he was even daring enough to prop his feet on the principal’s desk, lounging back as he replied, “Because French is the only other language I know how to speak.”
I can’t believe he just said that. He was milking it now and I knew it. He probably figured he was eventually going to get expelled or kicked out, so why not have fun with the whole thing. But with me, it was a whole different story. I wanted to get through this whole thing with at least a little dignity . . . I looked back at Harry. He turned his head to me and grinned widely. Okay, maybe I had already lost my dignity but at least not my chances of earning a scholarship.
