Leo lifted his head off of the thin cotton quilt he and Karlette had ended up on the night before.  He glanced down to see her snuggled against him, and immediately jumped up, brusquely waking her.

"Get up! We need to go see the damage. See if-" he broke off, unable to voice the possobility of everyone they knew being dead. Karlette mumbled her agreemebt, shook the grogginess of sleep from her mind and slid to her feet. She watched as Leo carefully lifted the small child into his arms and turned to her. She held his gaze for a second before turning back, unable to face the sexual tension that she had inside. She bent, dragging on her shoes she had kicked off the night before and stumbled warily to the root cellar doors. She waited until Leo was beside her, and she released the deadbolt that had held steady through the night. The  door was too heavy for her alone;

, so Leo shifted the child to his right hip and as one, they threw open the doors and emerged into a blinding light, and immediately stumbled back with shock. The farmhouse was gone. Completely.  Turning, they gazed into the distance and saw only a smooth horizon, dotted with the small outcropping of Essex, a city the ceased to exist.
