It was silent for a second and Leo almost thought that maybe, just maybe, this wonderfully free country had one.
But no, the men in white uniforms charged forward, the uniform of the rich country of Luna. Her people.
Warrior class, who else goes in the army.
They seized people with large forceful hands. People struggled but they where no match for the men that were built for battle.
She saw people running and hiding, only to be dragged back again.
They threw people into a large circle like a pen. They were now Luna's property.
When they got to our group they said "you are now property of the Republic of Luna, you will do as your told, come with me."
Let's go with this little group of misfits was not good at following rules. She was the first to stand, she punched him hard, a swift roundhouse kick to follow, then a powerful uppercut knocked him off his feet. The other men surged toward Leo but her loyal friends had already jumped them.
She wondered where they had learned to fight. She herself had learned from her father before he changed.
Julian was in a tight fist fight with a soldier, Will and James hitting a soldier over and over again with a stick. It looked like whack a mole.
Grace was hiding in a bush, waiting to spring. She saw her leap just as she turned away, Luke and Hannah were making quick work of a trio of soldiers, though it was clear that Hannah was doing most of the work. Strange those two. He was smarter although not by much, and she was stronger even though Luke was at least a good foot taller.
Another trio of soldiers charged them, Leo made quick work of the first one but the other to grabbed my arms and waist. Ooooh, who do you think you are to grab a girl you don't knows waist. Then she swung her legs around, sweeping the man off his little rich persons feet. The one holding her arms loosened his grip just a bit, but that's all she needed. She yanked herself out of his grasp. She punched him, leaving him groaning on the ground.
"Respect your women, they're superior." Leo brought her foot down on his head knocking him unconscious. She march over to the man who had grabbed her waist and boom. She punched him so hard he probably wouldn't wake up for another day.
"That's what you get." She had a brief moment of victory, then backness.
•••
It was hours before Leo came to.
She was in a jail cell, her head was in Julian's lap, his eyes were closed. His body was relaxed, at peace.
The only way she could tell he was awake was the gentle hand fiddling with her hair. It had come out of it's braid and fell in a red pool of fire.
She would have thought it was weird if she could have thought at all. Her head pulsed and it felt as if someone were pounding on the inside of her head.
She tried to speak but the words got caught in her throat.
She glanced around, Will was helping James to his feet. Will had a nasty bruise on his cheek and James had a split lip and blood was staining his chin. Hannah was curled around Luke. He was pale, like beyond the normal Irish pale, his eyes were closed. Everything about him screamed pain.
Grace was sitting with her back against the wall looking smug and satisfied by her job with the soldiers. Her leather jacket was laying in a heap of shiny leather next to her. She was wearing a thick crop top with her surprisingly still in tact leather pants. She had a white cloth wrapped around her bleeding arm.
The walls might have been white if the years hadn't darkened them to black soot. The iron bars were rusted but strong.
She turned her head back to Julian. Leo had never noticed how young he really look when he was asleep, or close to it. He was a beautiful boy, more than the average boy. He was beautiful in the way that only youth and the right mix of features could give.
Involuntary she let a small groan escape her lips as her head pulsed with a sharp pain.
Her eyes snapped shut as all the colors intensified and the lights blinded her.
When she opened her eyes again Julian was looking at her. He had hastily pulled his hand
out of her hair.
"You have a serious concussion, it's being treated now." He put a tentative hand between her shoulder blades and helped her sit up.
Then the world spun way to fast. Colors blurred and shapes merged. She crawled off of Julian's lap and to the closest wall.
She put her hand and head on the wall, longing to feel something steady. Then she was sick all over. Julian had come up from behind her and put a hand on her back. Holding her there.
Once she was done the smell of throw up almost made her sick all over again.
Leo had never felt this bad in her life. She was exhausted, light headed, and weak.
It took a few seconds for her to realize that someone was holding her up, arms wrapped around her. Julian.
He held her the way he held her when she had broken her leg falling from the tree.
He had always been a gentle boy, he could be cold when he wanted to, but he was gentle for those he cared about.
Right then two men came wearing white uniforms.
"Come," the one on the right said. "We are going to ID you."
God no, she thought. This is where my cover is blown, this is where they find out I am from Luna. Here goes nothing.
Leo rushed past grace and stuck her arm out.
"I will go first! I sure as heck want to get out of this awful prison cell and get some proper medical cell! I mean what were you thinking interrupting our mission!"
The soldiers look startled then confused than angry. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer? I can work with that.
"Oh come on, did they not tell you about where they got their information on the enemy?" Leo made a face that would have made any man question whether or not they had the right facts.
"Yes, but I don't recall them saying a little girl being a spy."
"Well who would expect a little girl' to infiltrate a opposite country, and lead a regiment at that. Now if you would please open this door and let me and my comrades out. You can check my chip, I am from Luna."
She pushed her arm out again. He put his scanner to her skin, it beeped twice.
He turned to his comrades. "She is from Luna no doubt. Hard to believe though, with that awful imperfection. It almost looks like a lion."
She snorted. She would have jumped out, claws extended, if she weren't in this stupid cage. That would have satisfied his craving to call me crazy though.
He started to move toward the locks on the door before his comrade said, "Wait! Why is her locator off, when people enter Shiera the locator goes on."
I'm screwed. Time to think of something fast. "Well our locators were turned off because we thought the scientists of Shiera had found a way to tap into our frequency. Of course they hadn't but we never got them turned back on again. We were busy getting you your important information."
"Why did you attack us? The war was over." Said another who looked like he wasn't believing a thing, maybe because he had a massive black eye.
"And risk blowing our cover?! Are you crazy!? Without orders to do so too?"
She was just starting to make head way when they asked "Why did you lose the fight, your trained fighters right?" And for once she didn't have an answer. But that's when Julian, her perfect other half stepped up and said "Well when you knock out our commanding officer, with a baseball bat, you don't tend to know what to do. As for the other part, we are still young and to have a complete training in fighting skills could be suspicious."
At that they finally gave, she just had to pray they didn't try to check the chip of the others.
But then again they had no reason not to trust a citizen of Luna, they were rich, weak minded, dim witted, obedient lazy bums. No reason to to trust.
She was almost out the unlocked jail cell door when she saw him.
Her father.
Once a hero, now a monster.
And he was walking right toward the graffitied police station.
He would know she was there, he would be able to see the art on the outside and her signature, the one she used when she was five. The little lion in the corner followed by the L and M.
She would have to face her past, she would have to face her father. And worst of all she would have to face the punishment for being caught here.
There was no escape.
