Our whole journey to Mumbai comprised us of being lost in thoughts.
I was still shocked at his answer.
His face was thoughtful and blank at the same time.
I could tell it was eating him from inside.
Right now,we were sitting in our car, heading towards the burial site.
I kept my hand on his and gave a little squeeze which broke him out of his thoughts.
He didn't give me a smile but blinked as if to acknowledge me and I nodded.
That was enough. Strangely enough though,he seemed to make a decision and spoke,"Saira, I need you to look over the burial site while I go somewhere else."
I frowned at his decision and wanted to question him but instead his eyes pleaded and I sighed before saying,"Fine."

My inner core seemed to be shook. I wanted to know answers.
I dropped Saira on burial site after she assured me that she would herself find the grave.
I felt confused and conflicted. It was as if universe hated me.
Still there was a hopeful part of me,that was happy to know that she is alive.
I took out my wallet to stare at the two pictures.
One photo was Of Saira smiling and other photo was of Ma.
My fingers traced the image as my eyes seemed to water.
My mouth went dry as I stared at her. All the sweet memories rushed back and even the bitter ones.
I couldn't feel anything and decided to return back to Saira. I couldn't calm myself still.
I entered the site and saw Saira seemed to be shivering herself as she tried to search for the grave stone.
I called out to her,"Saira!"
She turned back and seemed to be relieved. She quickly ran to me and spoke,"I am sorry. I can't go alone. I am afraid."
She had beads of sweat and she seemed scared.
I took her hand and spoke,"I don't think I can face anything alone."
I wanted to break down and cry.
Saira gave me a sad smile and rubbed my hands to calm me.
She finally spoke after some silence,"I guess that leaves us both to go together."
I nodded and firmly gripped her hand and laced my fingers with her.
We walked together, albeit a little slowly.
We walked down the lane that I had grown to remember through all these years.
Officers were standing and noting down minute details.
My hands tightened around Saira's fingers. I almost stepped back.
One of the officer spotted me and came forward,"Mr Nikhil?"
I just silently nodded, looking at the grave site which was dug up. I swallowed the lump that formed.
Saira responded,"Hello officer."
He gave us an acknowledgement nod and spoke," We were keen to catch up a drug peddlar who had hidden his goods in this graveyard. Someway or the other we had to open up your mother's site and we were shocked to find a fake skeleton. That too its decomposed rate wasn't too much which raised our suspicions when we looked over the date of death."
He went on to give other information while Saira seemed to froze.
I carefully listened the information he listed.
At the end, I asked him with all my hope,"Do you think my mother is alive then?"
Officer seemed unsure of himself before saying,"We are trying our best Sir."
I could only manage to nod before an idea stuck me.
My jaws clenched at the thought.
As we walked out of the graveyard site, Saira still seemed to be in deep thoughts.
We sat in our car and seemed to be in lost in our own world.
As soon as we reached home,I dropped Saira.
Saira, looking confused asked me,"Where are you going?"
I couldn't lie to her but I couldn't tell the truth either,so I spoke,"I am going for some work. Don't wait for me."
She could barely nod before I drove off to the house.
I knew there was only one woman who could answer my questions.
Mrs Malhotra.
I didn't lose much time before driving off in my old house.
