When it comes to making a list of those who hate going to family get-togethers, you can put my name in the top. Going to Dublin in the middle of the year just for a family gathering, leaving work is not what youths of my age would prefer. Instead they'd spend the night in pubs and clubs surrounded by girls. Well for me I like laying down on my couch thinking just about nothing. Nothing is a word that literally does not exist in my dictionary. Well people would usually say that I bought the wrong dictionary or I should have been more careful whie buying it. But to be honest I deliberately chose to buy "that" dictionary. Either I am thinking about "them" or work and sometimes work.
My hands were feeling numb after an endless non-stopping drive to Dublin one rainy morning. I never got why people even needed a family gathering in August. I wonder if Dad does it deliberately to make us kids be kicked out of work. It was almost after sixteen years that I'm going to the countryside. I remember the roof falling off when I was 11. Dad surely must have fixed it by now. But that doen't make me want to go there every fall and monsoon.
According to Mom the drive to the countryside is just six hours. But here I was after an eight hours drive and still not a sign of a countryside around me. The most surprising thing was people didn't even know where this ohh-you-will-love it place actually was.
"Mom, do you actually think that this place s somewhere in this world? Are you sure its not on Mars?", I asked pressing the phone to my ear.
"Yes the party is starting in an hour Al", she shouted. There was a lot of scurrying and talking in the back, I could clearly understand that.
" No I mean where is this place?", I half-shouted, earning glances from the fellow drivers, stuck in the traffic. No sooner had I said this she hung up, the traffic light turned green, a cacophony of horns almost had me deaf. So all I knew was this place was somewhere and so I just kept drivig aimlessly. Thats when my heart whispered,"You're in need of some adventure boy", I smiled to myself remembering when my mind used to say this every second.
With a slight breeze blowing outside, windows down and memories to accompany me I was doing quite good until an eccentric lady was waving her arms frantically in front of my car which made my head bump into the steering wheel while braking.
"Are you mad or something?"
"I'm something",she said with an innocent look. It was almost dark and to my utmost joy I was near the countryside because thats what my surrounding told me. And what my conscience told was to ask this lady what she was upto.
"I lost my way.My car's tyre got punctured and there's not even a hell of a garage here. You were the only decent person to stop by.",she said almost as she was reading my mind.
"Yeah I didn't have the damn patience to go the police station with the charge of murdering you", I murmured slightly irritated at her.
She got into the car, beside me. "So you can drop me at the nearest hotel", she said busying herself with the phone. The people nowadays in Ireland are far from being courteous; they just know the technique of how to get benefits from outsiders. I kept quiet and drove without purpose. I was hundred and one percent sure there were no motels and hotels in this region. It was almost five in the evening when I broke the silence with a cough. She looked to scoff and looked down to text again. This process was carried out a few more times until I spoke up.
"If I'm gonna drop you then I might as well know you"
"I'm Zendaya", even if it was said in a mechanical way, there was a mellifluous tone which lay underneath.
It was for the first time in an hour and half of driving with her that I actually noticed her completely. Her white dress exposed her dark-skinned thighs. Dark, brunette hair tied in a top knot with a two or three locks tossing in the breeze. Blue eyes with a drowning effect. Brown boots that came up to her knees. She was nearly as tall as me. Just the kind of Victoria's Secret models. She had a magnetic field around her that attracted men who noticed her. I did and was attracted. She was a single lady in all aspects.
I came to halt in front of an overly-populated house decorated with too many bright lights. This was the reason for the actual light pollution in this world. I at once reckoned that this could be none other than my house though it looked completely different from my childhood memories.
Without a moments hesitation, Zendaya got out and walked towards the house without even having the slightest idea of what was going on inside. But to be honest this was a lady with a high confidence level. I kept pace with her and tried to introduce myself and the house to her while she was in herown daze talking about how similar it looked to her own house during Christmas. But right then it was neither Thanksgiving or Christmas she said and smirked. Overall it was an anecdoche.
So as you can guess after an hour of chaos after entering the house, I reclined on the easy chair in the backyard with Zendaya by my side. She was literally quite shaken by so many people shouting I love yous, I miss yous and Who is shes. Most of all when I introduced her to my mother. My mother made it clear that her ears were for decorative purpose only. No matter how much I tried to explain it to her that she was not my girlfriend (though I secretly wished she was), mother wouldn't even bother to listen. She just kept on addressing her as my girlfriend.
"I'm sorry about what happened in the house. They hadn't seen for quite a time so you know all the emotions and feeling building up, it just burst out."
"Nope its alright I understand.", she said coming closer. Growing up in England has taught me what to do at these intense moments. I leant forward for what I expected to be a kiss and she did too. I was atlast getting a girlfriend I thought to myself. I would have murdered the inventor of all the phones in the world if I had the chance because just then her phone beeped followed by a loud ring.
"Yes yes I'm alright Joel. I gotta run along now. Bye.", she said squeekingly covering her mouth. I waited patiently until she hung up.
"Who was it?", I asked placing my hand on her thigh, smiling.
"My adorable husband",she said with an innocent look again.
