After the hefty. hearty, far from healthy meal, Smoke volunteered to clean up. While in the middle of it, he noticed Jade sitting by the window. "Heyyy gem stone, what're you doing here by yourself?" He asked leaning against the wall.
Jade shrugged her shoulders. "I'm just thinking."
"About?"
She shrugged again. "Just random stuff, like why aren't we in college? Why did Alex change his profile picture to a unicorn? Why am I so paranoid?"
Before Smoke could begin judging the author, he tilted his head. "Wait, paranoid?"
Her eyes glazed over Smoke. "Why am I always thinking you're going to cheat on me?" She asked almost wanting him to answer her question honestly.
"Because I'm so sexy?" He joked, hoping it would make Jade laugh. Unfortunately for the now seemingly narcissistic boy, it had the opposite affect. She looked away with a frown, making Smoke's innocent heart shatter. "Jade, I was joking." He said quickly kneeling down to her. "I wouldn't ever cheat on you, why are you even thinking this?"
The floor suddenly became very interesting to the Edanian guard. "That's just it, I don't know. I just always get scared, like who's Courtney?"
Smoke raised an eyebrow. "Courtney?" Realization hit him. Hard. He smiled at first but it quickly tuned into a full blown grin. "Courtney's Scorpion!" He laughed despite it not being an appropriate time.
It was Jade's turn to raise an eyebrow. "...?"
He smiled. "There's a story behind it. During the summer Scorp, Noob and I went out to get some Taco Bell, as we usually do. The guy at the register asked for Noob's name, he answered with Scorpy. The guy heard Courtney and Noob n' I found it the funniest thing ever." He chuckled.
Jade stared at Smoke with disbelief. "Do you know how misleading it is to have a girl's name that I didn't know, on your phone?"
"Yeah, I'm sorry. Guess it should've been obvious." He reached over to hold Jade's hand. "But seriously, I would never do anything like that to you. It'd be my loss if I did, you're amazing, Jade. There is no way in hell I would trade you for anyone else."
Tears weld up in Jade's eyes. Instead of hugging Smoke as many would expect she pulled away, hugging herself. "I'm sorry..."
"For what? " Smoke asked keeping his distance.
Her shoulders shook. "For everything, for never trusting you."
Smoke shuffled closer. "Quit blaming yourself, I love you, Jade. Even if you're constantly paranoid of me being with someone else. In fact, you acting like that always reassures me that you care about me...and maybe that's why I never get scared like you do. But that doesn't mean I don't have those thoughts, because honestly, I have them all the time."
Jade lifted her head slightly. "You do?"
"All the time, I just don't act on it. I mean, look at you. There are plenty of dudes and chicks, no discrimination, that would do anything to be with you. And that terrifies me. I'm always afraid that you might leave me one day." At that point, Smoke was on the brink of tears. After years of having bottled up all those thoughts it became too much to handle.
Jade saw this, her own emotions hitting the top of the 'Fuck-I'm-gonna-cry--but-shit-my-make-up!' meter. "Smokey, I had no idea." She wiped away her tears and moved closer to Smoke. "I'm so sorry..."
Smoke happily accepted her hug. "Don't be."
