August Turner flicked the radio on at 08:00 trying her best not to wake Sammy as he slept in, it'd been two months since they'd moved to Castle Rock from Santa Carla and even though the Turner family had moved away from the murder capital of the world it felt like they'd moved closer to it by far. August's elder brother Michael had stumbled through the door at 04:00 and was probably asleep somewhere in the house but August was too lazy and not the slightest bit bothered to go and look for him. She walked downstairs and opened the bread-bin, nothing as per usual. "Shit!" She whispered.
"August? Is that you I hear swearing?" August heard her mom come down the stairs in her casual dressing gown and flip flops, god August loved her mom, she'd had Michael when she was 16 then the twins when she'd just turned 19, she'd had a tough life.
"Mom, Michael came in late, drunk and all drugged up. So he decided to dive straight into the breadbin. Now I can't have breakfast." August threw her arms up in the air in disgust.
Mom sighed and turned around. "Michael Turner where are you?" Silence followed by a loud and long grunt come from downstairs before the two of them started to laugh their heads off and Michael appeared, leather jacket still done up and he was holding the bread in his left hand. August gasped dramatically.
"You prick!" She told him plainly as she bounded up towards him and snatched the bread from his hand, Michael only let her take it before walking up the stairs to his bedroom.
"Mom? You want toast?" August asked her as she slumped down on the couch, she worked shifts at the hospital as a nurse and often had to do nights.
"No thanks darlin'." She replied before Sammy came down, his hair standing on end like it usually did in the morning, August's twin brother was the definition on bed hair.
"I will." Sammy was already changed into his bright orange and pink shirt with cropped trousers and a black vest top, his average look. "Morning mother, morning sis."
"Ugh, Sammy where'd you think you're going?" Mom turned round and asked him.
Sammy shrugged. "Saw a couple of hot chicks walking by jus' now, gonna follow 'em into town." He said with a smirk on his face.
A big crash came from upstairs. "That's my boy!" Michael shouted. Mom just rolled her eyes.
"Well, take August." Mom flapped her hand in the air, ushering them both out, they grabbed their bikes from the sidewalk and the two of them raced into town, Sammy just beating August by a step. They walked past the Irby's Billiards where all the drunken wet ends would be this time of day and it was only 09:30. They'd abandoned the toast back home as Michael had taken a bite out of every slice, and were heading to Blue Point Diner.
The twins walked in and ahead of them were four boys around their own age. They all turned round to look at the two newbies and Sammy glared at them, August elbowed him in exchange. "What was that for?" She asked him.
"Uhm, I don't want them checking out my sister. And what was that for?" Sammy asked, August didn't mind it when he became a bit over protective, but on this occasion he could turn it down a bit. The twins walked up to the counter and asked for two diet cokes.
The four boys at the side of them just kept staring until the smallest, fattest one was pushed forward. "Uh, h-hi."
August turned to him and smiled. "Hi."
The boy stood there frozen as August and Sammy watched him for a minute. "You g-guys are now in town, huh?" He inquired with a bit more confidence than before but not too much. August nodded slowly and Sammy dragged her away before things got any weirder, but it only got worse, trusting Sammy to pick a booth, the four boys all went and sat with the Turners.
"I'm Teddy, Teddy Duchamp." The one with the glasses and weird ear stuck his hand out for Sammy to shake.
"Gordie LaChance." The quietest one, who was sat next to August, said.
"And I'm Chris Chambers." The one with the bright blue eyes said, August smiled and shook his hand. "Oh and this is Vern." Chris gestured to the small, fat kid.
"I'm August and this is my brother Sammy." She told them. Sammy smiled and his sister gave him a look, if they were gonna make friends in this town he better smarten up, or else. "We just moved here from Santa Carla." She explained.
"Ah cool, you guys looked round at all?" Gordie asked, August and Sammy shook their heads.
"Nah, Mom won't let us out unless our brother's with us, and he's practically a vampire so we had no chance." Sammy said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Apart from today." August carried on for him as the four boys listened to them intently.
"Why won't she let you out on your own?" Vern asked, receiving an elbow in the ribs from Chris.
August glanced over at her brother who'd started talking. "Well, a few months ago back in Santa Carla-"
"She's just overprotective!" August blurted out, stopping Sammy and feeling glad he hadn't just told the whole neighbourhood her life story. The four boys looked at her dodgy before turning to confer with each other and turning back.
"You're hired." Teddy said, grabbing August and Sammy's hands again.
Sammy smiled cautiously, laughing a bit. "For what?"
Chris let out a laugh. "To join our gang." August turned to my brother and grinned, this was going to be great.
