"You knew it was loaded you wet end!" Gordie screamed at Chris, not that this wasn't the norm but in the middle of the street? "I'm gonna be in trouble now that tupper-babe saw me."

Chris looked over to August and she rolled her eyes, Gordie could be really sensitive. At the beginning of summer his older brother Denny had been killed in a Jeep accident, three months had passed and his parents still hadn't managed to out the pieces back together. The poor kid was invisible in his own house.

"Shit Gordie, she thought it was firecrackers." Chris explained to him, kicking his foot into the ground.

Gordie continued to frown at him. "I don't care, it was a mean trick Chris."

"Yeah Chris, you scared him half to death." August whispered to Chris.

Chris them smiled at her and ran up to Gordie, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Hey Gordie! I didn't know I was loaded." He told the nervous boy, who still continued to ignore him. "Honest."

"You swear?" Gordie asked him, his eyebrows narrowing together.

"Yeah I swear." Chris said impatiently.

"On your mothers name - even if she goes to hell because you lied?" Gordie pestered him even more as August watched on from the sidelines.

"Yeah!" Chris looked like he was getting tired now and was fed up but August sent him a look and he lightened up a bit.

"Pinky swear?" This was the last straw.

"Yeah I swear!" Chris told him straight out before holding up his pinky, crossing his heart and kissing it. August looked at them both for clarification that this was all over, then they carried on walking but thy didn't get far.

As thy passed Irby's Billiards two pricks walked out. Richard 'Eyeball' Chambers, Chris' brother, and Ace Merrill, the leader of Castle Rock's gang of dickheads, the Cobras.

"Where're you going girls?" Eyeball asked as the three younger kids intended to just walk past them, but Ace didn't do 'walking past a bunch of innocent thirteen year olds'. He decided to snatch Gordie's yankee cap from his head. Gordie being Gordon and that yankee cap having been his dead brothers, freaked out completely.

"Hey, hey give it back man! That's mine!" Gordie screamed.

August turned to Chris and he didn't look the slightest bit worried he just glared at them both. "Hey! Give it back Ace. That's not fair, man!" She screamed instead, Chris grabbed my arm as she launched herself at the older boys.

Chris grimaced at them. "You're an asshole, you know that?" He said to Ace.

Ace took his cigarette from his mouth and puffed smoke into my face, earning another glare from Chris. "Your brother's not very polite, Eyeball." Ace stated, his bleached blonde hair stuck in its fixed position, it was all that grease.

Eyeball sniggered under his breath. "Now Christopher, I know you didn't mean to insult my friend." He smirked.

August laughed under her breath. "Yeah he did." She saw Chris turn his head to her but didn't look her in the eye, August shut up immediately, not completely knowing the reason.

"I know he didn't mean to insult me." Ace walked up to Chris, August could see where he'd dyed his bleach hair, it needed re-dying, desperately. "That's why I'm gonna give him the opportunity of taking it back." Ace spat at Chris who turned his gaze to the floor.

When Chris didn't want to take it back Ace grabbed his head and threw him to the floor, August couldn't tell if he'd made Chris bleed or not but she almost screamed when he picked up a still hot cigarette from the walkway and threatened to stab Chris' face with it.

"Take it back kid." Ace grimaced while Chris helplessly cursed on the floor.

August and Gordie stared at Eyeball, Chris' own brother, who just stood there and laughed. God knows what August's mom would say to Michael if it was the same situation. "Get off him!" She yelled. "You're hurting him can't you see? Get off!"

Chris sighed. "Alright, alright! I take it back!" He shouted and Ace pulled him back up.

"Great, now I feel a lot better about this, how 'bout you?" Ace slapped the back of the boys heads lightly and started walking away. "Have fun with your girlfriend, Chambers." Ace's remark made August angry, but she didn't say anything, she went to follow the two twats but Chris grabbed her wrist pulling her back.

"See ya later, girls." Eyeball waved and spat at him. Gordie stood staring at the two older boys walk away with his cap, August pulled him with us and we made our way to the tracks. She walked so close to Chris that she felt his hand brush against hers once or twice and she burned up a bit near her cheeks, so did he.

The three kids reached the tracks where Teddy was waiting with Vern. "Took your time." Teddy stated.

August chuckled. "We had a run in with two complete bastards." Chris laughed and they all began to walk along the tracks.

"Hey, August?" Chris held her behind a bit at the start as the other three walked along clueless. "You don't have to stick up for me like that ever again, I don't want you getting hurt because of me."

August could feel her chest tighten. He was so cute. "Oh, well thanks Chris but your my friend and friends stick up for each other."

Chris smiled. "You're stupid." He playfully punched her shoulder.

"Says." August returned the smile and for a second Chris went to grab her hand before retreating and throwing it behind his back and carrying on walking.
