I woke up with pains in my hand from holding his necklace all night and so tight. Yes, I did. I did sleep with his necklace. I opened up my palm looking at the gold, shiny material. I dangled it above my body before putting it around my neck and touching it once more. I looked over to my nightstand and saw that green flashing light making my heart jump a little. Was it August or am I just getting my hopes up for nothing?
I picked up the phone, typed in my password, and pulled down the bar at the top of my screen that has all of the notifications. The name that popped up made a smile form across my once tear stricken face. It was him. It was August. I had other messages but I, of course, had to open up his first.

I laughed at the last part before re reading the message a few times, smiling down at my phone like an idiot. A paragraph full of simple words and short phrases just made my whole morning start off on a good note. I looked at the clock and realized it was 8:30 and I had to be at work at nine. I sent August a quick text before running to the bathroom and hopping in the shower.
(Shower time *Elevator music starts.. now*)
I got dressed in my white and red uniform before running down the stairs. I made Lorenzo some cereal cuz I knew my mother wasn't gon do it.
"Mia, where's August?" Lorenzo asked before starting to eat his bowl of coco puffs.
"Umm.. Au- August moved out of town." I leaned against the counter, tapping my nails on the smooth surface.
"Oh." He said before looking down at bowl and using his spoon to play with the floating coco puffs. "Why didn't you go with him?"
I laughed, "Why would I?"
"Cuz you're his girlfriend, duhh!" I shook my head no before giving him a kiss on the forehead. I walked out the door, walking towards the restaurant. I still had some spare time so I stood outside and processed my thoughts. My thoughts on what would happen to Zo when I start college, thoughts on myself, and thoughts on August. I was about to sit down before someone yelled my name.
I looked up to see a girl with red, stiff weave and brown skin. Tanya. It had to be her. She the only one in town who would wear boots in the summer.
"What you want Tanya?" I said as I rolled my eyes. She looked me up and down before laughing.
"I can't believe August "likes" ya ass. Look, I just came to give you the message. Don't think that niggas gon fall in love with you cuz that nigga has no love in him. If he's gonna be with anybody its gon be ME. He just using you cuz everyone in town knows you a hoe." I raised my hand to slap the bitch but I couldn't risk getting fired. My family needed this money but this bitch was testing me. There was no such thing as putting me and hoe in the same sentence. Ain't no hoe in my blood.
"Don't be mad at me; be mad at August. What he tell you this time? That he's falling for you, how y'all friendship or whatever y'all got ain't gon ever end? Or did he call you beautiful and act like he'll never forget you? Maybe he gave you that- that gold chain so you could remember him. Its all an act. August belongs to me and only me, understand?"
I rolled my eyes, clutching my skirt so my hand wouldn't slip and punch her ass. "Who tf are you? Nobody! You just saying stuff tryna get into my head but you mad? For whaat thoo? Cuz I could get August if I want him? Or cuz he don't want ya bug ass? Yeah, its real bitch. Hold up, lemme find my map so I can show ya duck ass where you got me fucked up at!"
She stepped back a little before running her mouth, once again. "Just know that I'm that bitch that you don't wanna fuck with."
"And I'm that bitch that no one fucks with so wssupp? I laughed as she started to leave before throwing a mini fit.
"Just remember what I said Mia. He's using you. He used the same lines on me before. You just the next victim."
I turned to walk into the restaurant but not before thinking about everything she said. August did say all those things to me even though I didn't want to admit it. What if he is playing me? What if I'm just another broad he gave a necklace too?
