Zayn handed his empty breakfast bowl to one of the cooks, thanking them and heading back to his room quickly.
‘Oi, Zayn!’ someone shouted, he’d know that voice anywhere.
‘Yeah, Maz?’ he said, spotting his dark-skinned, best friend back at the food table, and wandering over to him.
Zayn and Marius flew over to the army base at the same time, in fact, Zayn had been sat in front of Maz on the plane, and had bumped into each other when they went to get food from the trolley, and that’s when they began to talk to each other.
Coincidence or not, once they arrived they were sharing a room at the base, so they got to know each other even more. They clicked instantly too, they already knew almost everything about each other.
Zayn thought he was lucky to have someone like Maz in the army, theres some people who’s roommates and friends all got killed in raids, and they just sit there emotionless, the only time they really do anything is when they fight. It’s so sad.
‘Dan told me to tell you that there’s some letters, from home, in our box, will you go pick them up for us?’ Maz questioned as finished off his breakfast.
A broad smile grew on Zayn’s face, ‘Niall!’ he squealed almost automatically, blushing when he realised what he said, but Maz was cool with him being gay, he didn’t mind at all, so he just grinned.
‘I- I mean sure…’
He started to head to the general’s, Dan’s, office to collect his letters, ‘and don’t call the general by his first name, he’ll rip your head off!’ but Maz just laughed.
-o-
‘Ah, Zayn,’ Dan said calmly, opening the letter box with the name’s ‘Malik, Zayn’ and ‘Listhrop, Marius’ printed clearly on it.
Dan was about twenty-five, and had been in the army for a good few years now, and had managed to get himself into the job of the general. He was a nice guy – when he wasn’t shouting – and was level headed out on the raids.
‘Here you go’ he said handing me about five letters and a package, ‘Woah, you’ve got a lot today!’ he smiled.
Zayn returned the smile, but then looked at the drawer, which was hanging open, ‘Isn’t there any letters for Maz?’ he asked, frowning slightly as if waiting to be given some letters.
Dan quickly looked back in the box, but there was obviously nothing there, ‘Er, no sorry’
‘Ok, thanks’ Zayn left the office and shut the door behind him lightly.
It was the seventh day in a row where Maz had received any letters from home, and the last one had only been a couple of sentences saying they missed him. The two boys had been out in Afghanistan for almost three months now, and Zayn had gotten almost twenty letters, whereas Maz had only got five. It was sad, Zayn always hated the look on his face when he found out he had no letters, and Zayn did.
He opened his small bedroom door, and hopped onto the hard bed, opening the first letter. His bedroom was one of the biggest ones of all, but it was still quite compact for two people to live in. There were two grey beds on either side of the room against the wall, both accompanied by a dressing table with a few drawers, and a chest of drawers each for clothes and whatever else they wanted in there. The room was like a black and white room, when they had arrived. Now the walls were covered in posters of famous people, pictures of friends and families, and a big picture each of their squad, which every member had been given.
The first letter was from his mum, telling him how things were at home, how everyone was doing and all that, the next was all of sisters, and the other two were Louis and Liam’s. Then he got to the package, he recognised Niall’s handwriting on the front of the envelope.
