Chapter Five; Not So Hot

It was the hottest day of the year. The sun radiated over the camp, reflecting glistening patches of light off of the force field. In the school, where the air conditioning broke, sat eight hot and tired spies each making comments about the heat.
"Guys I know it's hot, we're hot too, Mitch is trying to fix the air conditioning system right now so if you could all please stop complaining then maybe class will go by faster. Especially for me." Jordan wiped a hand over his forehead which was gathering small beads of sweat, and walked over to the desk by an open window, a warm, humid breeze hit against his face.
"We aren't complaining, we're stating the obvious. This place is a toaster oven and I nearly burnt my ass off when I sat down." Joey sat with his feet propped onto his desk and his arm hanging loosely from the window next to his seat.
"Hey! Language Joseph!" Jordan shouted as he walked over to the chalkboard and started to write down an assignment for them to do. Joey rolled his eyes at the name Joseph, he hated being called that. The sun shone bright onto his face making the slight red hue in his eyes more noticeable. Ella looked over at him and watched his gaze drifting from the window to Jordan, then to her.
"Why are you starring at me like that." Joey's voice has a slight sharpness to it.
"Nothing, I just thought your eyes look cool in the light." She looks away toward the front of the room and away from Joey.
"Weirdo" Joey mumbles under his breath, but as hard as he tried, he couldn't get annoyed with what she said.
They all hear the door to the school open and see Mitch walk in. He was out of breath and his clothes looked like he had fell in the pool. He grabbed a water off of Felix's desk, drinking it all in one swig.
"Hey! I needed that!"
"Oh i'm sorry, how about next time something breaks around here, you fix it in the 100 degree heat." Mitch throws the now empty plastic bottle back onto Felix's desk making him jump back.
"Should be turning back on any minute now." Mitch says as he takes a seat on Jordan's desk looking at everyone's tired expressions.
"Mitch, you reek, go and take a shower." Carly laughs as she waves the air around her with her hand.
"This is the smell of hard work, sorry i'm the only one who does it around here." Mitch gets up and strides to and out the door as the whirl of the fans breaks the silence in the school end everyone smiles in relief from the heat.
"Alright, now that that's fixed, everyone get out the english assignment from yesterday."

The school day went by much faster now that  the building was air conditioned. Soon it was five and everyone was dismissed for their training, which no one wanted to do considering it was still really hot outside.
"You know, I tried to get onto the parkour and I swear I heard the rubber on my sneaker start to melt."
"How can you hear it melt?" Jace gave Zoey a funny look after hearing her talking to Mackenzie.
"I don't know you just can hear the sizzling." Zoey took off her shoe and threw it to Jace, who noticed how the edges curled up from the heat.
"Zoey get your smelly shoes off the table i'm trying to enjoy my dinner." Felix scrunches up his nose while Zoey rolls her eyes and slips it back on under the table.
"That's the first time I ever heard you say you enjoy a dinner here."
"Well I was until all I could smell is that!" Luke starts to laugh, earning a look from Zoey who started to take small bites of her cheeseburger.
"Anyways, it kinda sucks that they didn't let us do anything other than train, it was so nice out." Luke says through a mouthful of fries.
He receives a few nods of agreement along with Joey saying how he'd rather train in a desert than do anything with them.

After they finished eating, everyone headed back outside, dreading to start training again. Melody walked with Mackenzie towards the parkour, they both decided on doing it together while they were eating. Mackenzie groaned as she stepped onto the hot platform, knowing this and the heat together is going to kill them.
"Why do we have to do this? They should seriously give us today off, someone could pass out, it's dangerous." Mackenzie said as she jumped and climbed up onto another platform, it was definitely harder to do than usual.
"Agreed, I almost hope someone does pass out so they'd feel bad and give us the rest of the day off." Melody added as she jumped to the platform Mackenzie just jumped from. She made it but barely, catching it with her arms and having to pull herself up, the heat from the platform burning her skin. As she got up she looked at her arms, which were now a shade of pink. She frowned as she touched them, cringing at the pain.
"That's just it!" Mackenzie shouted with excitement, scaring Melody into almost falling off the next platform she jumped onto.
"What?" She replied out of breath.
"We can get someone to pass out, but like they can fake it and we'll have the rest of the day off!" Mackenzie beamed, knowing her idea was amazing. She wiped her sweaty palms on her shorts as she studied Melody's reaction.
"That's great, except who's gonna want to 'pass out'" The purple haired girl said with air quotes. She was pretty skeptical of the idea, but she was willing to do it if it meant no more having to die in the heat.
"Hmm, we'll need someone who's a good enough actor... what about... Luke! He's pretty good at acting!" Mackenzie said as she stayed standing on the platform, not wanting to jump to the next.
"Alright, lets go find him then." Melody said as she jumped and caught up to the caramel colored headed girl. Mackenzie looked up and smiled at Melody, glad she was agreeing with her plan, a lot of times Melody just shakes her head and thinks they're too far fetched.
"Alright, ready to jump?" Kenzie asked turning to her friend. They hadn't bothered to complete the course, knowing there's no point since they'd just die of heat exhaustion anyway.
"Ready." Melody said with a slight nod. Mackenzie smiled as she held out her hand, waiting for Melody to grab it. Once she did they counted down from three and jumped.
