Sabrina sat on the floor motionless.Shawn looked at her and walked closer to the girl he had left behind. He knelt down and looked at her. His lashes cast the tiniest shadow under his eyes in the lift of the fire. The fire made his green eyes look topaz and she felt her heart skip a beat. Sabrina closed her eyes and placed her hands over her ears and repeated several times, "It's all in your head."
He donated his organs, for crying out loud. This was just a figment of her imagination creating him to make him seem all too real. There was no way that he was real.
Right?
Sabrina opened her eyes and found him gone. She let out a deep sigh and then removed her hands from the side of her head and stopped breathing.
"It's all in your head." She whispered.
"Don't you worry...about a thang..." She froze as she heard Shawn singing Bob Marley behind her. She turned around and saw him sitting on the couch. "Cause every little thang, is gonna be alright."
Sabrina screamed as she reached into her pocket and grabbed the keys to J-Bone as she ran out the backdoor and to the garage. She ran inside in a panic and then opened the garage door with the press of a button and drove out the garage in a hurry, then closed the door. Sabrina drove and as she drove, the radio turned on and she stopped in the middle of the alley.
She pressed the button on the radio and she gasped as she heard The Temptations My Girl.
"I guess you say, what can make me feel this way.... My girl, my girl...."
"My girl!" She heard Shawn's voice. Sabrina stopped the car right as the light turned red. "You can't even look at me?"
"You're not real." Sabrina closed her eyes as she shook her head. "You're not real. At all."
"I'm real. I'm right next to you." Shawn said. Her eyes were still closed and Shawn sighed quietly before changing the radio station. The Temptations no longer played, but instead Johnny Cash came on the radio. "The light turned green, babe."
Sabrina opened her eyes to the light that was now green. Without saying a word, she began to drive and her driving was slower than that of a moment ago.
With her hands at the wheel, Sabrina silently sobbed but managed to keep her composure as the Johnny Case song began to play. Her tears slowly rolled down her cheeks and they were hot and blurred her vision.
"It's our song." Shawn said. From the corner of her eye she could see him holding onto his knee in the same way that she did whenever he drove. "Whenever I look at you I have this song in my head."
Sabrina listened to the heartfelt lyrics that Shawn once sang to her. She came to a slow at the next red light and turned to face Shawn, who looked at her like she was the first woman he had ever saw in his whole life.
"Don't take this the wrong way...but why do you always look at me like that?" Sabrina asked him after they had climbed into her bed for a nap.
"Like what?" Shawn asked her. He played with her hair as he tucked it behind her ear.
"Like, I dunno. Like I'm the first person you ever saw."
"Because you're the only person I'll ever see." Shawn replied.
He slowly blinked as he looked at the love of his life. Tears had streaked down her face and her eyes were puffy and red and her hair was in a frizzed mess. And to him, she was still beautiful.
"The other night dear, as I lay sleeping." Shawn sang along with Johnny Cash, his voice more vibrant than that on the radio. "I dreamed I held you in my arms. But when I woke dear, I was mistaken. So I hung my head and cried."
