Her world was dark. Maxine looked all around her. It was all black. Nothing was seen but the darkness.
"Dad?" she cried looking around her. She was searching for him. Where was he?
"Maxine!"
Maxine turn to where the voice was calling her. It was her father's voice. Picking up her speed, she saw him in the distance. Her father was injured. Maxine was getting closer calling to him
"Dad!"
"Maxine, turn around! Don't get near me," he cried as if he was dangerous. Maxine didn't stop. Her father was kneeling, holding his arm as it bleed terribly staining his uniform. His head was dripping with blood. The closer she got, the more he seem in pain.
"Dad! Please. I just want to help you," she said getting closer. He winced at her steps.
"Not yet," he said "When you help them and see your true past-" Her father groaned, laid on the floor, slowly dying. "Only then we can all be set free. I promise." He gasped his last breath, lying lifeless. Maxine eyes filled with tears. She had lost her father again. Maxine turned around, only to be knocked out by a metal hand that hit her head.
Maxine sat up as tears and sweat covered her face, head pounding. She looked at her surroundings. She was back in her dorm laying on her bed. Maxine turned to Bailey's bed, seeing Bailey and Carlos talking in a language that sounded like tagalog. Knowing that they seemed worried. Carlos and Bailey noticing her waking presents.
"Maxine! Your awake!" Bailey said hugging her in relief. "Thank god! Wait, you sweating." Bailey notice her back and face was drenched in sweat.
Maxine brush off the sweat from her head using the back of her hand. "I'm okay, just . . .had a nightmare." Maxine got out of bed and looked out her window. It was already night. How long was she sleeping? And what had her father meant?
"Maxine! We got worried, you were sleeping for hours!" Carlos stood next to Bailey, still having guilt in his eyes. Maxine notice when she looked at him.
"I'm okay now," she told him. "Besides, you don't have to feel sorry Carlos. It was an accident." She hoped this would make him feel at least lest guilty. Carlos's face flushed red. Crap.
"Since your up, you must be hungry. Me and Carlos were about to get you something to eat till you woke up." Bailey unbraided her black hair, leaving it wavy and let it flow down her white tank top.
Maxine didn't feel hungry, which was strange for she can get hungry easily. "I know a place. But can one of you drive us there?" Maxine asked. She didn't know why she would pick this place. But it just hit her as if it was the right thing. At least that's what her mind thought.
Carlos offered to drive Maxine's car. Bailey sat next to him, Maxine stayed in the back still a bit tired. Carlos placed the address Maxine told him and they started to drive. "So, how did you meet Carlos?" Bailey asked looking at the back of the car.
"I was at a job interview for Pizza Kingdom."
"Really?" Bailey now turned to Carlos. "You didn't tell me you had a job!"
"Well I had to get one since I'm not going to college," he cringe at what he said.
"What!? Carlos! Mom will be furious with you when you tell her that next week!"
"Bailey! I don't want to go to college! It just doesn't feel right," Carlos said back. "It's just my instinct."
Bailey smacked him on the head. "Ow!"
"So it's just you instinct huh? Well tell you instinct that I'm going to scramble your brains till mom comes over! Ang stupid naman!" The last bit must have been tagalog.
Maxine cut in. "Wait. You two are related?"
Bailey turned to Maxine. "No. But we're step brother and sister. My mom remarried to Carlos's dad."
"Yeah, and I had to learn tagalog since Bailey hasn't learned english that much," Carlos said.
"When I learned english, we haven't get along since," Bailey chuckled. "And we still don't."
They drove the rest of the way as they talked and laugh. Maxine never felt this happy ever since her father. Carlos pulled up to the parking lot and parked in front of the building. Getting out of the car, Maxine read the sign, she hasn't been here for a long time."The Starry Gang!
"Where Friendship and Pizza Come to Life!""Whoa!" Carlos looked up at the sign. His eyes were sparkling. "I haven't been here since I was ten!" Bailey turned towards Maxine.
"Maxine, why are we here?" she asked. Maxine didn't respond. Instead, she ignore Bailey's question, she headed inside as the two followed her inside.
Wow, she thought, This place hasn't changed a bit. It was left the way it is back when she was younger. Children were screaming and eating pizza as they played arcade games, the yellow walls were nice and fresh, the wooden planks surrounded the walls, trimmed with a red strip that went in between the wooden planks and yellow walls. The black and white checkered tile floor, and the main stage, where they transferred the animatronic from their personal stage and were placed for special occasions. Maxine looked at her surroundings for the animatronics. But she only found one. And it was Green Boy. He was performing in the same stage years ago with Skully the Pirate. But Skully wasn't there.
Green Boy's green skin was polish, his black top hat was more shiny, cheeks painted a deep pine green. His eyes were a bright blue, which she remembered long ago, and his mouthless face, well remained mouthless and his only strand of hair that was a piece of bendy plastic. His black bow with a shiny star represents he was a part of the gang.
"I'm going to order us something and buy some tokens," Carlos said, heading to the counter.
"Okay," Maxine said, not looking at him. "I'm going to look around." Maxine turned, knowing where she'll go first.
"Go ahead, I'll find us a table." Bailey headed to the area with the red tables. Maxine didn't respond. She looked around at the kids who were enjoying Green Boy's company. Where were the others, she thought. Maxine headed towards Green Boy as he sung a song.Let us sing with the stars and the moon.
Let us dance happily in the warm dark night
As I shine in the dark, I hug you tight in my arms
La la la laMaxine listened to the song. His soothing voice was just as she remembered it. A Stars Lylybye, she remembered. Her dad would sing to her this song every night when she got scared. But Green Boy's voice . . . it sounded . . . off. She looked at his deep blue eyes. For a moment, she thought that he looked back as if he actually was a real person. As if he knew her.
