It's been four days since moving in her college and meeting Bailey. Not much happened since Maxine told Bailey her story of her father, they just studied with each other for the beginning of college in a month and talk about their future goals.
Maxine laid on her stomach on her bed, bored out of her mine. She tried to entertain herself by scanning YouTube videos on her phone, but not much had interest her so far. Maxine felt alone and miserable without Bailey. Bailey was off buying lunch for them which felt a lifetime including shopping for supplies for college and their dorms.
Maxine sighed. First, she was broke, so she couldn't go shopping for stuff she needed and would have to rely on Bailey to buy all of the things. Second, it was boring as heck! She need something to do, an activity, a club, homework, or something! Then it hit her.
She needed a job.
Quickly, she grabbed out her phone and started typing furiously for job openings in the area. She grabbed her bag and pulled out a pen and a pad. Maxine started to jot down addresses of the locations. Placing the pad and pen on her bed, she threw off her clothes to change into something nicer.
Maxine headed out to the parking lot, wearing a yellow and white striped shirt that fitted her, and grey knee-length shorts. Her hair was neatly brushed and sprayed, making her frizzy hair settle.
She went in her car and started the engine. Driving down the town, Maxine took out her pad from her jean pocket and looked at the first place she would go to be interviewed.
Maxine pulled up to the parking lot and headed into Pizza Kingdom. Inside, she headed to the counter.
"Hi, I heard about your job openings," Maxine said to the guy in the counter. He looked about her age, a bit pale. The guy had messy brown hair with streaks of blue in some places. His eyes were green and his cheeks rosy. She felt herself blush a bit.
"Oh, really? I didn't think anyone would go here for a job," he said. "Anyways, my name is Carlos." He pointed at his name tag.
"I'm Maxine."
"Cool," Carlos pulled out a clipboard form under the counter that had about . . .a lot of papers. Maxine cringe a bit from the stack paperwork. Carlos seemed to notice.
"Don't worry. It's not going to take long. Most of it is just questions," he said stepping away from counter and now standing in front of Maxine. "Follow me to the back. We're going to interview you there."
She nodded as Carlos lead her through the kitchen. The kitchen was filled with employees. A big mixter was mixing the dough, while there was a topping area with employees quickly putting sauces and cheeses. The area was a bit hot from the ovens, filling the room with aromas of different pizzas.
"Here's where we interview." Carlos stopped in front of a wooden door. It was the break room. Carlos open the door and lead Maxine inside. The room was small. With only three round tables with plastic chairs, Carlos lead her to the couch that was in the back. Maxine sat down on the couch. It was very squishy, it made her sink in the cushion. Carlos hopped onto the couch and pulled out the pen that was connected to the clipboard.
"Okay. I want you to fill this out for me." He handed her the clipboard. Maxine grabbed the clipboard and pen from him and begin to jot down on the paper. It was mostly about her information, like the day of her birth, any health issues, and allergies.
When she was done, she handed it back to Carlos.
"Okay. First question: Why do you chose to work here?" Carlos looked up from the clipboard for her answer. Maxine was stumped. Why did she want to work here? It was mostly for money and something to do. But that's what one of the main purpose of a job is. Maxine thought back to her childhood memories. She manage to choose the one she cherish the most.
"My father," Maxine said. "Back when I was little, my father would always bring back pizza from his night shift."
Carlos wrote it down on the paper and looked up, raising up one eyebrow.
"Is that all? Because of you father?" he said. Maxine shook her head.
"I was really close to him. When he had a night shift, I would always be restless at night, not knowing when he will come back," Carlos nodded as Maxine continued. " . . .but when it was morning, he would always come back with pizza to show he was back to work and we would eat together. It was like a reunion." Carlos quickly jot what she was saying.
"So does he still do it to this day? This is an off topic question by the way," he said, placing the clipboard on his lap. Maxine tightened up from this like she did with Bailey when she showed her the picture. She fell silent. Maxine finally spoke.
"No. My father . . .he's deceased." Maxine felt a lump in her throat, but she still continued. "My father, Rex Baxter, he died from an accident on his nightshift. The next morning, I didn't see him. I was scared of why it took him so long, until they told us."
Maxine waited anxiously for her father at the front steps of her house. What's taking Daddy so long? she thought. Her dad usually would be here by now, holding the pizza box he always brings from his night shift. Fifteen minutes passed by. Maxine was already ready to cry. But ahead, she saw her father coming to the steps. Maxine stood up straight, ready to give her dad the biggest hug. But she looked closer at her dad. It wasn't him. Instead it was another man she recognized. It was her dad's friend, Richard. Maxine went up to him. "Where's my daddy?" she asked tugging on his pants. Richard only looked down at her with a pitiful look in his eye. He carried her up and rang the doorbell. Her mother open the door.
"Richard what are you doing here? Where's Rex? Is he late?" she asked looking around for her husband.
"Rose, I'm sorry. He's gone." Richard looked up at her as tears form in his eyes. Her mother shook her head. "No No No, NO!" she yelled. "That's not true! Tell me it's not true!"
"I'm sorry, I wish it wasn't. He was found dead this morning," Richard's voice shook and tears streamed down his face.
Maxine finally realize what it meant, he was never coming back. Her dad . . . was taken away from her. Never to be returned. Maxine began to wail. "I WANT MY DADDY!" she screamed at him as her nose ran and tears rolled down her face, never ending. Maxine's eyes were red.
That night she never slept. She alway chanted for her dad that night. Never stopping. Her head filled with nightmares every time she closed her eyes. Her dad was the most important thing that she possessed. This was the day that changed her whole life . . . forever.
"Maxine? Maxine! Are you okay?" Maxine snapped back to reality. Carlos was shaking her, with a sense of panic and concern in his tone and face. She realized that her lungs were burning for oxygen, she wasn't breathing. Quickly, she gasped for air. Maxine kept breathing in air, How long was she like this? she thought, still sucking for air. It felt so real, like she was reliving that day.
Maxine's head was pounding, feeling dizzy, Carlos offered to drive her back to her college. Maxine sat in the passenger seat, hugging her knees. Her vision was blurry and her head felt heavy.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drive you to the hospital?" Carlos said with concern in his voice. "The doctors can see if your really okay." Maxine shook her head. She just wanted to go back to Bailey and go to sleep.
"No, I'm okay," she muttered. Carlos sighed.
"I'm really sorry. Truly I am," he said with guilt. "It's my fault. That was a personal question. I didn't know about how important your father was to you." Maxine saw his face flush with shame and embarrassment.
Carlos pulled up to the parking lot of her college he got out of the car and helped Maxine. Maxine looked up to see Bailey running towards them.
"Maxine! Oh my gosh, I got worried. What happen to you!?" Bailey panicked as put Maxine's arm around her shoulder. Maxine moaned. Her head started to hurt even more. Her vision was turning dark. Soon, everything turned black, only hearing Carlos and Bailey's voices.
