"BOW! DUNKED ON YO' ASS AGAIN!"

"Nigga you cheating!"

"Don't hate the player. Hate the game, bro"

"Man, whatever..." I said as I stood up

"Wassup with you and ol' girl these days?"

"Man, she getting on my ass as usual. Always mad at me. Fussing at me. She's not understanding how hard it is to find a job out here. Especially when you have absolutely no one calling you back."

"You try asking her pops? You know he's a big time lawyer and shit..."

I close the refrigerator and just look at him.

"Her daddy doesn't like me! He thinks I'm "bad news"..." I say with air quotes. "Her mom isn't too fond of me either. So, there's no reason for me to go to them..."

I sigh to myself. Just thinking about it makes me stress out. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. In which...I'm trying to get out of.

I've never had it easy. I never had anyone give me anything. Never had anyone to look up too. It was just a hard life for me.

I never had anyone show me the right way. I only knew the wrong. So...I stayed in a lot of trouble.

Growing up, I was basically the man of the house. My dad was never around. And my mom was basically a drunk. So, while she'd be passed out on the floor...I'd be out making money.

And when I say making money...I mean selling dope.

That was the only source of income as I see it. I'm the oldest of six kids. And now...none of us speak. We all just went our separate ways.

When I met Rae, it was in the midst of my troubles. But, she accepted me. She's my world. It's just her family that hates me. Strongly!

They won't even give me a chance! And its been five long years. But, these last two years has kind of put a strain on my relationship with Raven.

Me not having a job is the main issue...

"Aye. Apply for the corner store. They're always looking for someone..."

"That's because Old Man Sanders always firing people. I ain't tryna go through that. I need a job that'll help me-Well us...get by..."

It got quite for a few seconds. Then my friend looks at me.

"Alright. If you haven't found anything within the next couple months...I'll put you on to my job. I'll talk to my boss and see if you can get interviewed..."

"Word?"

"Most definitely..."

Then I hear keys jingle. When the front door opens, she stops looks around then closes the door. As she sighs she sets her stuff down looking at me.

"Hey, Rae..."

"Hello, Dontaè..."

She walks away and he looks at me.

"She seems upset..."

"Not something I'm not used to used too. Let me find out what the issue is this time..."

"'Iight bro. But, let me know in a couple months..."

I nod as he leaves. I close and lock the door then head to the bedroom. When I walk in there, she's completely ignoring me.

She walks past me, but close enough to bump my shoulder. I pull her back and look in her eyes.

"Wassup with you?"

"Is that a real question? I didn't expect on my off day to be cleaning up behind a grown man..."

"I was gonna clean the mess up..."

"When?"

I give her a shrug. She rolls her eyes and pushes past me.

"Did you at least look for a job?"

"Yea..."

"How many applications have been filled out?"

"Umm. I did one today..."

"One? Just one..?"

"Yea..."

"Talk to me when you've done at least four in one day..."

"It's not my fault that I'm not getting a call back, Rae."

"You have to call and check on them. Show some initiative! Go up there and ask for the manager. It's a lot more than just filling in blank spaces, Jordan..."

"Everyone doesn't have a well known daddy! Shit doesn't get handed to everyone!"

She stops picking up dishes and looks at me.

"I didn't get my job because of my daddy and my name. I got it because I actually talked to the hiring manager. And I showed I wanted that job. I work at Walgreens. Not a law firm. You need to try and talk to management. Maybe you'll have a job, too!"

She walks off towards the back and I hear a door slam. I sit on the couch rubbing my head.

That's one thing I shouldn't have said. I already know how stressful this is for her. And I know I'm not making it no better.

Imma just tell Dontè to talk to his boss. Maybe this is the only chance I really have for a job.
