"Huh so you want a childhood story..." I whisper to the test paper before me, tapping and twirling my pencil while my other hand plays with my skirt.

But the problem is, I don't have anything remarkable from my childhood. Probably birthdays and such, but I don't really remember much about my chiodhood.

I look around the room. Three seats northwest I see my best bud Kael writing enthusiastically. A seat right beside me is my cousin Zhea, already done and is now sleeping soundly.

And looking back at the empty sheet before me...

Oh memory, please cooperate and give me some nice childhood memory!

I glance back to Zhea. I manage to catch some of the words written onto the title box of her childhood story.

"So she's writing about the treehouse we made that day..."

And that's when an idea clicks to me.

This cousin of mine, she totally missed an opportunity by writing about a treehouse instead of the real thrill she got as a child.

I pick my pencil back up and begin to write. Not only I will also tell my perspective here, I also had a bit of a peculiar encounter, so the teach should be fine with this.

Wait, that peculiar encounter... why didn't it come to me earlier if it was so peculiar?

No matter, I'll be writing about it anyway.

"A Grinning Fox," my mouth mumbles along. Then I put in a question mark.

And so I begin.

This is a story of my cousin back when she and I were 5.

One day, out of nowhere, she ran into my room with beaming eyes. I had just woken up from my sleep, so I told her to go away.

But then she said, "I met a fox with a big smile in the kitchen last night!"

That wasn't enough to pique my 5-year-old self's jnterest.

"How did it get in? Shouldn't you tell aunty?"

"No no I did see it! And he wasn't like, an animal fox. He was a fox person!!" My cousin said as she flailed her arms.

"Maybe that was your dream, Zhea."

"I pinched myself! I don't think it was a dream!" She continued to insist. Then she got up to my bed and brought her face real close to me (a bit past my comfort level) and stated, "your favorite ball was floating beside him. I think he was gonna steal it and I stopped him!"

Hearing the mention of my favorite ball, it instantly got my attention.

"Tell me about it!" I shouted, pushing her away too while I was at it.

She stumbled back a bit, but sat right back up.

I stop for a while to look at the time. Ten minutes until the test ends. I still have time.

So I go back to the paper.

"So you see, it was dark out. I wanted water so I got to the kitchen."

I nodded along enthusiastically.

"And then there was this tall guy with a fox head! He had a big big smile on him!"

It was here when I noticed something odd. The green vase in the corner of my room was blue. But I didn't mind it, assuming that someone had swapped it. So I continued to listen.

"And well, your ball wasn't the only thing floating around him! There was also mom's old red dress and one of my bottles from my collection!

So I yelled at him to put those back. He turned to me and I saw his white clawed hands. So-"

"Wait he's got claws!?" I interrupted.

Zhea nodded. "Also, his fox head kinda looked like cloth too! Now that I think about it, it could be a mask..."

"Are you sure he wasn't a burglar?!?"

"No. After I told him about your ball being your favorite, he immediately flew it back here! It flew, the ball flew, it really did!"

I glanced around the room again. This was when I noticed my superhero figurines had funny colors.

Again, I brushed it off, assuming Zhea had messed around with paint. And so she continued.

"Then he got close to me. And I felt his head. His head really was cloth! And it had nothing inside it!!"

"What!? So it was a ghost!"

She shook her head. "He said he's not. He also said to keep this a secret and then he opened the door and took off. I tried to go after him but the door was locked."

"But didn't he just go out?"

"That's the weird part."

"He also said to keep this a secret too didn't he? Why are you telling this to me?"

"It's okay! I can trust you, Rika!"

"Well okay then..."

"Two minutes left!!"

Oh no. I quickly quicken up my pace.

We exchanged a few words and later, she left the room.

And then the door closed on its own, and my room turned into funny colors. I heard a lot of funny sounds as well.

I began to panic here.

Huh? What happened next?

"1 minute left!!!"

Oh memory, why are you failing me now??

"Let's see... I saw some trippy things... someone floated in I think?" I tap my pencil furiously.

"And um... said some shady things... ward? Ward off... No that's not it..."

My pencil hover above the sheet anxiously.

"Ward... ward dragon? As if. The heck was it...?"

My feet begin to tap loudly. I see Kael glancing to me but I pay him no mind.

"'she had entrusted you... the secret she kept...' Is that what the guy said? 'cast a spell...'"

"10 seconds left!!"

Argh you know what!?

I grab my pencil and start to write very quickly.

Some guy floated in and said some stuff about 'the secret she kept' and 'cast a spell'. Ward was also mentioned.

And when I woke up, it was the next day and my cousin didn't say anything about the matter.

"Over!! Put your hands up in the air!!"

I slam my pencil down and put my hands up.

"So Arika, what did you write?" is the first thing Zhea asks me as we get out.

"That fox guy you met when you were 5." I replied.

"A fox..." She tilts her head a bit. Then she perks right back up. "Oh that guy!! Why didn't I write about him?"

"You just missed a great opprtunity."

"Ahh I completely forgot!!"

Then Kael walks out with a silly grin. "Guess what I wrote." He says as he eyes me.

"That time you met your idol and got his autograph." I say. "I forgot his name."

He gasps. "How do you know!?"

"You told me just yesterday."

He mumbles an "oh right..." and then turns to Zhea and asks about what she wrote.

I gaze at my friends. Then to the window behind me.

The sky is a nice blue.
