terrified feelings

The five of you silently sat on a cafeteria table listening to the anxious munching of Matt as he crunched down on a bag of chips. He was stressed and scared, all of you were. You and the crew had escaped from the mass of zombies roaming the streets. Not all were particularly fast, so the escape wasn't all that difficult. Nonetheless, it was terrifying.

The ones that somehow avoided being hit by Tord's bullets got extremely close. Their distorted and rotting faces had left an unforgettable image in your mind.

Edd lead the group back to the school where Matt began cry, claiming one of the zombies might have bitten him. Even after checking over him thoroughly, he still was convinced. However, he eventually calmed down when you agreed to give him some food. Not wanting to use up the supplies in your backpack, you came down to the deserted cafeteria and found a bag of chips in the kitchen. That's where you are now.

Edd's shaggy hair covered even more of his eyes as he laid his head on his hands. Tom tapped his fingers in an unkept rhythm, and Tord simply looked down at his feet.

Finding yourself looking at Matt, he seemed to be perfectly fine now. He was smiling and bubbling, chomping loudly on his salty potato chips. "You know, " Matt spoke with his mouth still open, "that wasn't all that bad." Edd, Tord, and Tom slowly looked up at him with confused expressions. "We easily outran them. They didn't even touch us!" The oddly ironic comment made everyone raise an eyebrow.

"Matt, weren't you the one..." Edd started, however realizing that it would be useless to start up an argument.

"What?" Matt shoved another handful of chips into his mouth.

"Nothing..." If Edd's hair wasn't so long, perhaps you would of seen him roll his eyes.

"No, really. What were you going to say?" Matt was clearly clueless.

Tord snapped his head towards the oblivious Matt. "Oh, my lord, are you really that stupid?"

Words erupted from the three as they all tried to speak at once. You were unable to pay attention due to Tom leaning over and whispering.

"Wanna' go to the janitor's closet now?" he asked quietly clanking the key against the table.

You really just wanted to sit and rest. So much was going on and you wanted a moment of time clear your mind, to go back into the deepest parts of your mind where you could forget your troubles and walk in a wonderland of your own imagination. You wanted a land filled with careless adventure, where there was no risk of dying because everything was controlled by you. A world where people wouldn't betray you and you wouldn't feel alone in a place full of people, but Tom was waiting for an answer, and you remembered your self promise: "I will not let my life suck because of the apocalypse" or something along those lines. Plus you wouldn't get much silence around these three babbling teens. So you would suspect your mind escape would have to wait.

"Okay," you reply. Tom simply got up and walked away without addressing his friends. You followed behind, scuttling awkward across the floor. The lights were completely out in the hallway. If it were not for the few windows, it could have been pitch black. Tom swirled the key ring around his finger, whistling a quiet tune to himself. How was is it that such a person as Tom could hide a secret from his closest friends and yet share it with someone he had only met yesterday? The boy made you confused, perhaps it was the skull shirt.

Tom stopped whistling and the rest of the walk to the janitor's closet was silent. You suspected that you and the guys were the only ones in the school, there was no reason for anyone to be there. In fact, you weren't sure why you had even continued to keep going.
