Melanie's POV:

I sit in my environmental studies class listening to the teacher ramble on about the affect that pollution has on the earths air, soil and water. It's a very interesting topic if you ask me, I love learning about the earth.

The weekend went by as slow as hell. When I worked on Sunday, nothing crazy happened like the day before so that was good. It's Monday today and I am painfully tired. Sam was having night terrors last night so I stayed up to sing him some lullabies.

I look down to my paper and start writing down some of m the causes for pollution. Finally after what feels like eternity, the bells rings signalling second period.

I get up and mope to the door with my binder in my hand. As I stroll to my locker I get stopped by a plastic smelling Barbie doll in front of me.

"Stay away from Asher you bitch." She sneers with a nasally tonne. I try to walk around her but she takes another step in front of me.

"Did you here what I said loser?" She asks with an annoyed tone. This girls name is Rebecca. She is probably the biggest bitch I've ever met. Not to mention that she gets around. I bet she's been with almost every single guy in senior year!

"Just..please excuse me I have to go to class." I ask. I am not in the mood for an argument today.

Rebecca starts laughing sarcastically, "And why would I do that? Asher won't stop talking about you and it's pissing me off. He's my man, so fuck off." She says while her annoyance turns to anger.

Rebecca and I went to elementary school together when we were young. Her and I were actually the best of friends for all of grade six, seven, and eight. As soon as we got to high school, she wouldn't associate herself with me anymore.

"I don't like that moron anyways. You can completely have him." I smile as I try to push past her. She grabs me by my shirt and pushes me back again. I really need to hit the gym and lift some weights, I'm weak.

"I know I can have him. I don't need some nerd to tell me that. Anyways, catch you later shit stain." She says as she laughs walking away.

What kind of name is that anyways? Seems kind of lame to me.

As I begin to step forward I notice Asher leaning up against the locker laughing and talking with Rebecca. I really hate people.

As I arrive at home, I step inside to hear my mom on the phone having a heated argument.

"Sir, this is so unreasonable. I understand the terms, but you can't lay off that many people and not give them any other options!" She shouts into the phone. My mom never gets angry, so seeing this comes as a shock to me.

I quietly walk in a sit on the kitchen stool opposite my mom. I look at her and she catches my glance then shakes her head. I see worry surrounding her eyes.

A few minutes later she hangs up the phone and collapses on the floor. "Sweetheart, I lost my job." She cries out to me.

This is not good. Without mom having a job, we have no income but the three hundred dollars I make once a month.

I get out of my seat and crouch beside her on the floor. "Mom, we'll figure something out okay?" I try to soothe her. She shakes her head and continues,

"No, honey. As your mother it is my job to support you. And once again, I failed. I am so sorry Melanie." She cries pulling me into a strong hug.

I don't blame my mom for this whatsoever. The company she works for is huge, and employees are laid off and rehired all the time. It's not her fault she was fired. Now we just have to find a way to make money in the time being.
