Chapter Two

"Your-your-baby?!" Arizona said as she shook April. Arizona's breath stopped as she heard the flatline on the monitor. "She-She's pregnant!" Arizona screamed as Owen pushed her out of the way. Amelia burst in checking April's pupils. Arizona's tears fell to the ground as she watched April die. "Get it together and page Carina Deluca!" Owen said grabbing Arizona. Arizona's memories of their friendship flashed before her as she picked her head up and took a deep breath. She needed to listen to April's request. She paged Carina and removed herself from the room as she realized she would probably have to work on April's baby in utero. She prepared herself and imagined what April would say. April would tell her to be brave. April would tell her to be a soldier. Arizona whispered to herself, "I am a soldier," as she stood up and dried her tears. 

Just as she got up she saw April being rushed out of the room and Amelia yelling, "She's got a massive brain bleed! Clear an OR!" Arizona caught up with Carina asking about the baby. "It's about a month old. It has a fine heartbeat but we need a fetal team up there for the baby during surgery," Carina said. She stopped walking and put her hands on Arizona's shoulder's as she saw Arizona's face darken. As Arizona teared up she remarked, "She is such a strong mother. She has already lost one baby and almost lost the second.." She lost her words in tears as she continued, "How the hell did this happen?" Carina held her as she cried in the quiet OR hallway. 

Carina reassured her, "Arizona, you are the most talented fetal surgeon and the most loyal friend I know. Pull yourself together and get in there for your best friend and her baby. We will all be there for you and her." Arizona nodded and sniffled as she walked into the scrub room. She took a deep breath and tied her scrub cap. "One thing you could do to help," she said to Carina. Carina turned around, "What can I do?" Arizona sighed and said, "Page Jackson Avery." 

Arizona hurried into the OR as Amelia was working on her open brain. "How is it Amelia? Just tell me the truth." Amelia answered, "Truthfully Arizona, she's got a bad bleed. But there's a chance. There is always a chance. Only freaking superheores could fix this bleed. But thankfully that's what we've got in here." Arizona looked down at April's face and held it for a second. She was almost lost in her hope as soon as she heard another flatline. Just as she heard the tone, she also heard the door. Jackson flew in and his eyes widened at the sight of April on the table. 

He froze for a second and let out a gasp. "No! No!" He screamed as he fell to the ground. Amelia, Owen, Arizona, Bailey, Meredith, Jo, Webber, Carina, and what seemed like a million interns immediatly started trying to revive her. The screams and eerie tone of the flatline filled the OR. Jackson's world was completly crushed. He sank to the floor yelling for April. Minutes passed. Nothing worked. "It's been 7 minutes. There's nothing more we can do." Bailey cried. The rest stepped away and stood in silence. 

"No! Do something!" Jackson pleaded. He got up and ran to her side and started shaking her. "APRIL!" He held her crying. "Come on! Help her!" He screamed. Meredith pulled him off of her. He fell back in a raging fit. As everyone stood quiet, Amelia uttered, "Time of death-" A tear rolled down her cheek. "Time of death 3:47" And just as she finished her sentence she heard the monitor beep. Everyone looked up, out of their misery. Beep..beep..beep. A heartbeat. Not a strong one, but a heartbeat. 

It took Jackson's breath away. He sobbed as he fell down again. Amelia picked up where she left off right again and the OR was no longer silent. She turned to Mer whispering, "The baby will be fine with Carina and I got this. Please take Arizona and Jackson out to worry somewhere else." Meredith nodded and led Arizona and Jackson out the hall and set up a gurney for them outside the OR. Arizona took Jackson's hand and said, "She is strong. She can make it through this." Jackson cried softly as he looked down and said, "I hope so." 

As Arizona sat next to Jackson a million thoughts of the baby rushed through her head. Was Jackson the father? Was it Tom? Was it that intern Roy? Was it someone else? She knew it would come up and she had to tell Jackson. "Uh-Jackson," she said. Jackson looked up at her. "I don't want to ruin things in terms of revealing pregnancies again for you guys but. April. She's pregnant." Jackson's eyes widened and he stuttered, "Shes-what-Arizona?!" Arizona grabbed his hand as said, "I know. It was a surpise to the rest of us too. She told me to save her baby before her when she had a few concious moments earlier. I don't know who the father is, but I think it's important you know. Even if it's not your's, you are still her person." Jackson nodded and even more tears came down his face. "Thank you Arizona. Thank you." 

A few minutes later Amelia came out and stood in front of Jackson and Arizona. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "No..is she dead?!" Jackson exclaimed. "She's okay." Amelia stated. "She made it. There's no way of knowing if she has brain damage but her and the baby made it out alive." Relief filled the air and Jackson and Arizona beamed and cried tears of joy as they hugged for minutes. "You can go see her in a few minutes. I'll send an intern." Amelia told them. "Thank you. Thank you Amelia." Arizona said as she smiled. 

As Arizona walked away to go see April she turned around to see Jackson, just standing still at the end of the hall. "Jackson? You coming?" She asked. Jackson looked up. "You okay?" Arizona walked closer to him. "I almost lost her," he exclaimed. Arizona was passionate as she said, "I know. It's so-" "No," Jackson interrupted. "I almost lost her. I can't live without her. This changes everything," Jackson said as he sprinted away. "Jackson?! Where are you going?" Arizona called out. 

As Jackson reached April's room he yelled out "Is she awake?! I need to talk to her!" Amelia turned around with a dark look across her face. "What. What is it?!" Jackson asked. "Jackson- I don't know if/when April will wake. She is in a coma..."
