Chapter 5
I don't own Shugo Chara or its Characters!
Amu's POV:
I sat on the bed, trying to decide if I really trusted Ikuto or not. He had let me stay with him and hidden me from his father, but what if he just wanted to gain my trust to let me down later.
If I really thought about it, then I felt that I did trust him, but I was afraid that he would hurt me later. In the end I decided that I had no choice but to trust him, so I might as well do as he says.
I looked around the room, lost in my thoughts. I never left my place on the bed, afraid that Ikuto would walk in on me snooping through his stuff. That would be awkward. I noticed that he had a sheet over one side of his wall, straight across from his door.
I decided to abandon the bed and quickly check out the sheet. I hopped off the bed, as silently as possible, and walked over to the sheet, slowly lifting the bottom corner and peeking behind it. I was immediately blinded by a bright, radiating light. I quickly let the corner down, tripping backwards over my feet and falling on mu butt. I quickly covered my mouth, muffling my cry of pain and trying to regain eyesight at the same time.
As soon as my eyesight came back and the pain subsided I stood up and cautiously pulled the corner of the sheet back, shielding my eyes with my right hand. Light filled the room, banishing the darkness to the corners and under the bed. I slowly uncovered my eyes, allowing them to adjust to the blinding brightness.
My eyes adjusted as I looked at the scene on the wall. It was... a TV screen? But why would it be in the wall... Wait! Its a window! Wow, I feel supremely stupid now...
I quickly checked for a lock, maybe I could escape! I found the lock, and with shaking finger, I unlatched it. The window swung open with ease, it was obviously used often. I looked down, instantly getting a queasy feeling in my stomach as I realized I was 2 stories up.
I pushed the corner of the sheet out the window, hoping it could support my weight. I looked down and noticed it reached to a rather strong looking tree branch. If I could shimmy down the sheet to the tree branch, then I could climb down the tree to the ground. But then what? I didn't know were I was and I didn't have a cellphone. I turned around and looked at the dresser. There sat Ikuto's phone, just waiting for me to take it.
I quickly ran to the dresser and grabbed the phone, slipping it into my back jeans pocket. I grabbed the blanket off the bed and threw it out the window, praying that it wouldn't snag on a tree branch. It fell to the ground, knocking some dead leaves off the tree on the way down, but thankfully it didn't get stuck.
I threw my leg over the window sill, realizing I didn't have any shoes on. I swung myself back into the room and ran to the dresser, praying Ikuto had extra shoes and socks.
I pulled open all the drawers and started shifting through everything. I quickly found my old socks and shoes(why was he holding my stuff hostage in his drawer!) and threw them on my feet.
I realized I probably only had two minutes till he got back. I finished lacing up my army style boots(Sadly they were REALLY dirty and would probably be ruined by a week from now). I ran back to the window and grabbed the sheet.
I tried to gather my nerves as I stepped up onto the window sill and looked down at the branch that I had dictated as my target. I was really bad with heights and ledges.
Clearing my head, I closed my eyes and propelled my self toward the tree branch. I quickly opened my eyes and realized I had jumped slightly to far. I clamped ,y mouth shut to keep from screaming as I let go of the sheets corner and let gravity take over.
I fell 6 feet to the ground, bracing myself for a rough landing. I hit the ground feet first, feeling my ankle give under my weight. "OW!" I quickly covered my mouth as I realized how loud that was. I quickly checked my ankle, thankful to find that it was only sprained. I stood up and quickly grabbed the comforter. I threw it over my shoulder and limp-ran to the forest line that surrounded the house.
I sighed in relief as I got farther and farther from that horrid place. I ran for an hour before I stopped to rest. I stopped right in the middle of two fallen trees that made a perfect resting spot. I ripped my shoe off of my sprained foot and yanked the sock away.
I ripped a strip of materiel from the blanket I was sitting on and made a splint with a branch I had taken off the fallen tree in front of me.
I muffled my grunts of pain. Just in case Ikuto's father had sent people to hunt for me, I didn't want to be found because I was to much of a baby to get over a sprained ankle.
I sat in silence for a moment thinking of how to get food for tonight. Thats when I remembered Ikuto's phone. I reached into my back pocket and grabbed the phone. The first thing I checked was the battery. 99%, thank goodness he remembered to charge his phone last night. The next thing I checked was cell service. It only had one bar, maybe enough to get scratchy phone calls, but no texts. Tomorrow I would have to climb a tree and try to get better service.
Next I checked in the settings to make sure the phone wasn't GPS traceable. It was! I quickly disabled the GPS, praying that they hadn't already started tracking me. I'd have to move quickly in the morning. I checked the time; 6o'clock. That means its getting dark, soon.
My stomach rumbled as I realized I hadn't eaten since the night before. I must have slept in really late. I tried to remember how to make a squirrel trap, but couldn't quite remember all the details. I decided to try using a home-made sling instead.
I ripped another strip of material from the blanket and made a quick and sloppy sling. I grabbed a good sized stone and placed it in the sling. I tested the sling, praying it would work.
I sigh in relief as the stone flies at top speed and hits a tree, spraying bark about as it bounces off. I grab another stone and start to watch for a squirrel. Thirty minutes later I have a fire started and I'm skinning a squirrel with a sharp rock I found by a small stream about hundred feet from here. I finish the squirrel and place it over the fire on a hot rock that I had also found by the stream.
After the squirrel is done cooking I place it on a large oak leaf and eat it slowly, trying not to burn my tongue. I was thirsty, but I wasn't sure how to get water from the stream to the fire in order to get it hot and have it clean enough to drink.
I decide to use the squirrel skin. I get the skin and take all the fur off, then I rinse it in the stream. I go back to my mini camp sight and find a really pointy sliver of wood. I take a thread from the blankets frayed edge that I had ripped and I tie it to the sliver of wood, then I sew the squirrel skin with the thread and burn the edges together in the coals of the fire.
I go to the stream and fill it with water, then I take it back to the fire, careful not to spill it. I place it in the coals and let it boil for a few minutes. Then I let it cool off on a cold rock from the stream. After it cools off I drink all of it and start the process over again for tomorrow.
After the next batch of water is started cooling I put the fire out. I lay down on the blanket and bunch up a corner of it to make a pillow. I wrap the remaining bit of blanket around me and try to warm up as much as possible. It is probably mid October by now, which means its going to get down in the twenties tonight. Realizing I might get frost bite if I go to sleep like this, I come up with an idea.
I get a rock from the river and place it in the still hot coals of the fire. After heating up for ten minutes I grab it from the fire, using a thick patting of oak leaves like an oven mitt. I set the stone at the foot of my blanket and wrap myself back up. That should definitely keep me warm enough.
I drift off to sleep, praying that I don't get found in my sleep, and that my family doesn't lose hope of finding me.
