Knock. Another knock. A bang. Another bang.
I tried to recover from my shock.
"Mom, are they the guards outside the doors?"
"No, Jadie. O-once locked, a l-laser b-beam is a-activated. They k-know that." How does she know almost everything around here?
Another bang. Another louder one.
"Then who?"
"M-must be Miles," she pointed out the place from where we heard the thumps from. I ran up a flight of stairs. I knocked. Someone knocked back. Four times.
"Get back, Jadelyn!" Mom tried her loudest, strongest voice at the moment. I lunged back. I ran downstairs. Looked through the glass on the door. There were around eight men. Went back up.
"Jadelyn." Fawn colored hair. Covered up most of his forehead. His eyes. Pacific color eyes. The richest shade of blue. The brightest shade of turquoise green. Perfectly blended. A dominant jawline. A few inches taller than me. Gosh.
"Hurry up! Let's get going." Absolutely straightened rose blonde hair, all messed up. Fringes till her eyebrows. Light green colored eyes under those cat-eyed glasses. Her shirt, covered with soot, exposed the collarbones with a tattoo of an arrow. One word to describe her in all. Pretty. The same girl.
They had entered from a door I didn't notice was there before.
"How did you come in?" I asked, dazed.
"Long story," told Blondie, heaving a sigh, brushing her hair. "We'll explain later. Now, move."
I charged back to Mom and hugged her, letting my qualms drift away. I couldn't just leave her here. Not here. I tried to stifle a sob. I felt my throat go dry on the thought of letting go of Mom. She didn't give up on me. But I was. I can't do this to her. She came here for me. She rescued me. She got shot in an attempt to save me. And I did nothing. I could hear Blondie begging me to get up but I was just glued there to Mom. Tears came down. I tasted them. Salty. Like sea water. And a bit sour. Like an orange. They taste like medicine. My eyes were blurred. I bent down and rested my face on my mother's chest. She stroked my hair, tranquilly.
"Go n-now. G-go," she whispered. I got to my feet against my will, wanting to hold on to Mom for a bit longer. I never got to spend time with her. And when I did...
It's my fault. Mom was in that condition because of me. I did that to her. Someone holds my waist, pulls my arm and drags me away from her.
She mumbled, "I love you, Jade." I looked into her stormy grey eyes. They were teary. Sad. Downcast. She didn't want me to leave either. Then why was I? I could just stay there with her. The look reminded me of Dad. He gave me the same look when I was about to leave him alone.
"I love you, Mom." She tried a faint smile.
"His n-name i-is Skye."
Skye.
