-"Ah, I've seemed to have forgotten to gift you with a weapon, do you Have any particular type of weapon you desire?" Affirms Merak with a grin.
A weapon? He means to watch me kill these creatures, he's testing me.

-"Any weapon?... Hand me a crossbow if you will!"

-"Well that is certainly an interesting choice of weapon, haha!"

-"Well that is certainly an interesting choice of weapon, haha!"

In just a few seconds, Merak was able to conjure a crossbow and a quiver, full of at least 30 bolts. He presented the stringed weapon to me, but not an ordinary one as this one seemed like if it was made of glass. "G-glass?!" I think to myself "How the hell do I fight with this?"

-"I know what you're thinking but please, do not underestimate your weapon as it is the only thing you have"

But why glass of all things? Is this crossbow even strong enough to shoot a bolt without breaking? All I can do now is just hope...

I ready my weapon and wait for the opponent's move. There are 3 wolves, each of them after my skin, wanting to break and crunch every limb of mine. The farthest one, the one on the right, makes its first move: it comes after me at full speed. I place my left foot back, crouch and begin aiming for its neck, the weakest spot on most creatures. It all happened in a split second, right as the first beast pounces at me, with its mouth wide open and it's sharpened claws ready to tear flesh, I shoot from my glass crossbow a singular bolt, which was also made of the same material, glass. The tip of the bolt was sharp enough to pierce completely through the beasts neck and make it fail to lay even a single claw or fang on me. 1 down, two more to go.

Enraged by their fallen comrade the two last beasts come closer and begin circling me.
My only chance here is probably to weaken one and try to close combat the other, though I do not expect to come out unharmed, I just need to wait for an opening.

The 2nd one strikes with its claws but I roll to the right, dodging it's first swipe but he swipes a 2nd time and manages to scratch my left arm, in retaliation I shoot it in the chest. The blow wasn't fatal but it weakened him causing him to retreat for only a moment. While reloading my weapon, the 3rd wolf swipes at me. I back flip into the air and it's as if time slowed down in that very moment, I aim for it's eye hoping to have the creature perish in one fatal blow. I fire my bolt and it manages to pierce its eye causing it to fall back on the water and remain there lifeless... Only one left.

The last one, weakened by a bolt in its chest, finally comes at me. With bloodied claws and fangs, it charges at me. For a brief moment, I saw my opening, my chance to strike and deliver one last blow to the hungry beast. I leap in the air and onto the beast to jump off its head to position my body in a vertical position over him, I aim, I shoot, it roars, I land and it falls...

After slaying the last beast, I take a moment to catch my breath. I look up in the sky and see Merak smiling at me, as if proud.

-"Now... You answer all of my questions." I affirm, in pain by the scratch on my arm

-"Fascinating, you took down these beasts with such ease, you are indeed as skilled as I predicted! Well then, I guess I'll have to answer your every inquiry then." He pauses for awhile, looking down... "What is it that you wish to know, Orion?"

-"Who, or what are you?"

Merak sighs

-"As I've stated before, my given name is Merak and I am a..." Merak stops for a few seconds as if to think of proper words to say. Without letting him finish, I cut him off:

-"And how exactly do you know my name?"

-"How could I not?... This is all in your head after all, I know everything about you!" Merak smiles while hovering around me "Be careful now... You better wake up soon before you forget how to..."

The world around me was darkening, I feel my body weakening and I collapse...

❖ ❖ ❖

An early and pleasant morning in Rivlt's plains. The sun was shining brightly, illuminating the vast plains dotted with dandelions and daffodils. I was sitting on the grass, book in hand, studying magic, dark magic to be exact. Dark magic is often referred to as evil or malevolent contrary to light magic being holy and benevolent. I say the spells themselves aren't evil or good, it all just depends on the wielder... In ancient times, actually, people would favor dark magic for use in medical services but that changed at one point as today people mostly use holy magic or medicine made from local apothecaries as it appears more pleasant for the eyes.

I had studied for at least 2 hours but got interrupted by an approaching shadow.

-"Leahna, there you are! I've been looking for you."

-"Master Izami, does something ail you?"

-"I ask for your assistance, Leahna. I believe we have company approaching Rivlt from the south. Your classmates are already heading in that direction to slay Greyhounds that approach, they've been acting a lot more hostile than usual"

-"Consider it done Master Izami, it shall be dealt with swiftly!"

Before picking up my books, I formally bow before Master Izami, the man that has taught me everything I know about Magic, and take my leave to meet up with my comrades to the south.
