All of us wanted to get high grades. Of course, who wants to get low grades? I don't think someone wants that. Besides from the fact that grades became the basis in identifying if a person is intelligent in particular subjects or not, there are a lot of advantages you can get from it. One is passing your subjects. The system requires us here in the Philippines to get at least a grade of 75 to pass a subject. For some it is easy to achieve even a grade of 90 while others are just contented with their grades as long as they passed. Second advantage is finishing your studies. In Saint Louis University (where I study), students cannot graduate with a zero unit even if it is only a minor subject. That is why they have to pass requirements to pass their subjects. Third advantage is getting a stable job equal to the course they have finished. Fourth advantage is, they will be paid well. And lastly, they will be able to meet not only their needs but their wants also. That is why it is easier for a person who have received a formal education to economically prosper than those who has not. But the thing is, because of grades a lot of students are now slaves of it.
What is a grade-slave first? These are the people who will do anything to acquire high grades. They are the students who consider cheating as a way to pass, whether in quizzes, assignments or even in examinations. They are the ones who attends class for the sake of attendance; since some teachers give plus points to those who have complete attendance. But not all grade-slaves are doing bad things to pass. They can also be the nicest and most disciplined students. An example of these, are the students who will really review everything on the point of memorizing what's in their books, notes or copies given by teachers. That's because they are so anxious of what score or grade they might get. They are also the students who will cry because of their grades when in fact they actually passed.
Grade-slaves are those who study only because of grades without realizing that it will also give them disadvantages. For example, they will not be able to apply what they have 'learned' in real life. Since they could only consider that learning only takes place in the four corners of the classroom. They will also fail consider the fact that all of those written in the books can be used in reality. Another is, they will eventually forget what they have learned in school. This really happens when memorization is the only strategy used to study. Remember, the lowest form of learning is memorization.
Because of the grade-slaves also, such saying had been created. For example, "To cheat is better than to repeat," and "The door to success is education and the key is cheating." If you're going to analyse it, you can perceive education as a condition to success rather than a gift to be thankful of.
God gave us education because He does not want us to be stupid. He want us to learn math, English, physical education, psychology, theology, history and even science and philosophy to discipline us even if it seems not really useful in our chosen fields of specialization. Remember, if we are disciplined we won't be easily deceived and disobey God. Rather we will be His instruments to reach out for the others. God did not just create us to be slaves of our grades. He created us for something that is bigger than what we have ever imagined.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!
