“What exactly are we doing today, Maxie?” I asked, shivering into myself as we plunged deeper into the woods. Maxie said nothing as we walked, not giving any indication that she was still aware I was following her. Scuff Nathan and Hector were side-by-side with me, stepping over old wood and snapping twigs in their path. When I tried to look to Nathan for an explanation, he old shrugged. Apparently he knew as much as I did. I was kinda sweating under the pressure. What was so important that Maxie would call the whole pack together and take us on a field trip into the woods? (Not to mention I had snuck out of the house for this. If anyone in the house decided to randomly wander into my room, I would most definitely be doomed.) Hector was fidgeting and paranoid the entire way there, keeping his “warrior” face on and constantly scanning our surroundings.

“What’s got your panties in a bunch?”

“Hm?” He snapped towards me, coming out of super-ninja mode. “Nothing, just antsy.” He tried to shrug nonchalantly, and failed.

            “Yeah, I noticed. Why?”

“It’s just-“ A twig snapped and he sprung into action, grabbing me by the hand and yanking me behind him, ready with a knife in his hands.

Thank God it was just a rabbit.

“Shit Hector, calm down!” I panicked, shoving him away from me. He slouched over and threw an apologetic glance my way.

“I just keep expecting that Northern wolf to jump out of the bushes.” He scratched his head nervously.

“Don’t worry.” Nathan cut in to our conversation, slipping his arm around Hector’s shoulders and grabbing him in a loose choke hold. “We don’t smell Northern anywhere.” His face shone with an easy-going grin.

As much as I wanted to agree with Nathan, I still didn’t trust my senses. After all, I had hidden in the woods from my whole pack without them finding me for an entire day. Our woods were big, our territory bigger. And if Northern showing up to my concert was any indication, then he could be lurking around anywhere, just out of sight, ready to pounce.

I shivered and pushed those thoughts to the back of my head. Only an idiot would challenge an entire pack (plus a hunter). And even without my pack, I could take this joker. And besides, he wanted more than just sex. He wanted a Mate, which I would have to consent to being. And there was no way in high hell that I would ever consent to being that sicko’s Mate. So I was safe. I really had nothing to worry about. Really. Nothing. I wasn’t even concerned. He couldn’t touch me…

            Who am I kidding?

Instead of thinking about my impending doom, I focused intensely on the ground in front of me and thought about how to solve this whole dilemma. We had tried ignoring it but it wasn’t going away. If anything, it was getting worse. What we needed to do was to hunt the wolf down, make it know that what happens when he disregards the rules, when he even thinks about all the disgusting little things he’s been planning for me.
