Chapter Ten: The Attack
Silence filled the chamber. The pups, whose eyes had opened, looked oddly at Rain, but sensed they should not speak. Then, after a few moments, Heather lunged at Rain.
The two wolves locked in a screeching, writhing mass that rolled and flipped. Cameo leaped back, and yelled "Quit! Before the humans hear you!"
Heather released Rain, and immediately growled "She's an outsider! She carries a different scent! It's a crime for two wolves to mate if they're from different packs! You can't have a paw in two packs!"
"I left!" Rain said, her one eye narrowed.
"Then you're a traitor!" Heather yowled.
"Enough!" Nightshade snapped, in a very 'Disappear-ish' way. "Wolves leave their packs! It's rare when they're a senior, but it happens!"
"They were asking for me to leave!" Rain growled. "You'd of left too, if you got attacked every day for no reason! Never had training, it was you're born with fighting and hunting skills, or you're out. Elders starved, the warriors refused to respect them. Pups and whole litters died, the mother couldn't leave the pups alone and starved too, and the males refused to hunt for them. You'd of left too!"
Silence followed this, and Nightshade jumped on Heather. The two wolves vanished before a single scream was heard. Rain and Cameo were left alone with the pups, and Rain's shoulder was torn and bleeding. She was panting heavily, and Cameo could tell it would best to not say anything until she cooled off.
The pups were cowered against a wall, terror filling their eyes at the fight their foster mother and real mother had; one pup was twitching its ear nervously. One pup, russet colored like Rain with streaks of dark chocolate, stepped forward, trembling with its tail tucked tightly underneath it.
"That wasn't very nice." The pup said, in a shaky voice. Rain laughed, only she didn't stop; she rolled around the chamber, laughing and gasping for breath.
The pup looked like it didn't know whether to laugh too or worry about Rain's mental health. One gold pup with green eyes, however, leaped on top of Rain, batting her ear playfully.
Rain rolled over on her back and tossed the pup in the air, catching it every time as it yelped with excitement. The other pups, eager to join in, ran over and clamored on top of Rain.
"They seem to like you." Cameo said, forgetting he didn't want to be noticed.
Rain stood up, her pups still jumping on her. "I try." She laughed.
