Chapter Twenty-Four: Blood and Death
“Wake up!” Breeze said. Cameo groaned and opened his eyes, blinking the sleep out rapidly as he looked up at Breeze. “Speed caught an elk for us.”
“Really?” he asked groggily, just now realizing how hungry he was. He hadn’t ate anything for a nearly a week.
“Really. Now get up!”
“Fine.” Cameo got to his paws. Breeze was right; there was a dead elk in the middle of the lybro island. The smell made his belly rumble with hunger.
He trotted up to the elk, where eight other wolves were already digging in. Blood stained their muzzles as they feasted.
A sharp howl cut through the air suddenly. The wolves looked up in alarm, for the howl was filled with sheer terror. Winter is dead!
Cameo took off in a heartbeat. Please, Lupus, let him be lying!
He pushed off on the ground so hard he kicked up several patches of grass, sending them flying in his wake. It took him circa five minutes to reach the area the howl had been sent, but it seemed to stretch on for five decades.
When he arrived at the scene, he saw Winter laying on her side, a flow of blood running from her throat. He saw a wide-eyed Wind standing next to her, bewildered.
With a snarl and a flash of teeth, Cameo had pinned Wind down on the ground. “WHO DID IT?” he roared.
Cameo felt something crash into him, knocking the breath away from him. “ENOUGH!” he heard a familiar voice yell. Speed!
“WHAT WAS THAT FOR?” Cameo screeched. “I WAS ABOUT TO-“
“KILL HIM?” Speed howled.
Cameo felt shocked. If Speed hadn’t of came here when she did, I might’ve actually killed him!
He backed away, horrified. His eyes were wild, and nearly every hair on his pelt was standing up in terror. Then he bolted yet again- he ran away from Winter’s dead body, Wind’s shock and Speed’s anger.
He paid no attention to where he was running. He kept stumbling, his vision blurred from the salty tears that ran down from his eyes. He soon collapsed upon the ground and began sobbing.
