Chapter Twenty-Eight: A Trusty Tornado

Nineteen wolves walked the hills, heading towards Dark Moon’s territory. The declaration of war was official. This was no pup’s game. Real blood would be spilled. The wolves of Moon Stars were risking their lives, to defend their territory. They were not running from Dark Moon like they had the humans.

Death. That’s what they were thinking.

The strategy was to attack only one pack, then take flight. There was simply not enough wolves to attack a whole clan, which was made up of two wolf packs or more. They planned to attack the Death Shiver pack, which, according to Rain, had the least wolves. “But don’t let your guard down a second,” she had said. “They kill for the pleasure of it, not because they have to. That was proved for all of you to witness when they murdered Winter.”

Now, Rain was leading the pack into war, Cameo and Disappear by her side. Rain was the war leader, as she knew everything Dark Moon.

The prophecy nagged at Cameo. Something didn’t feel quite right, but he wasn’t able to put his paw on it. The prophecy had said “Two will become one” but there was no second thing. Something was missing, but he didn’t know how to put it in words.

It took thirteen days to reach Dark Moon’s territory. Travel was hard, but at least this time they had Rain, since she could create clouds to shield them through the hottest part of the day and make it rain at dusk so they could drink after their day of walking.

“Circle around their territory,” Rain directed, after sniffing the border’s scent marks. “This is Blood River’s part. Death Shiver is next- a gorge separates them.”

“You heard her,” Disappear said, and walked off the direction Rain had pointed out with a flick of her ear. Her wolves glanced at each other somewhat nervously and followed.

Cameo hung back now, with Breeze by his side. Breeze had refused to stay behind, at camp. She did not want to go to war, but not wanting to leave Cameo had overruled that. Not that she’d told him that.

They stopped after a few tree-lengths. Disappear was talking to Wind and Rain, and, after a few moments, the two walked off. The air began to feel more humid, as Rain began to evaporate ground water. Dark storm clouds were brewing above Rain and Wind’s heads. Once Rain was satisfied with the size, Wind summoned a wind to sweep the cloud directly over Death Shiver’s territory.

Cameo saw Wind’s eyes screw up in concentration, and glanced towards the storm cloud. A funnel began to swirl down from the dark cloud, and lightning flashed, thunder booming along with it. Wind was creating a tornado.

Wind wasn’t always able to make lightning and thunder. That only happened when hot and cold found their way to each other and decided to pitch a fight. Lightning and thunder were simply a bonus to the tornado.

Cameo felt a strong wind tug at him, and he knew it must be at least ten times worse in Death Shiver’s territory. The tornado was over with in just a few moments, however; Wind was quickly exhausting, and Rain was running out of water to summon in order to feed the cloud. Quick yet deadly, thought Cameo. The tornado was helpful in few yet important ways: it most likely killed a few wolves, and the wolves surviving would be far too distracted to notice the approaching Moon Stars. This would make work easier for Moon Stars.

Rain tweaked their battle strategy, due to the unexpected tornado Disappear had asked for. “Death Shiver is bound to have ran away from their territory.” She began, authority in her voice. “We will still use the fight-and-flight strategy, of course. We have no use for this macdath territory. It’s tainted by Dark Moon and always will be, whether they’re there or not. Now, since the tornado, I suspect they evacuated their territory without looking back. Guessing by the fact Death Shiver is friendly with Blood River, I assume that they ran there.”

“Then Blood River, here we come.” Disappear said glumly.

.....

Frick ya why can't I make a tornado
