I was on the verge of sleep that night. The red moon was covered by an eerie black cloud. A perfect ambience to fall asleep. It was then that I heard a dog's howl. It was just a normal howl at first. Just like when dog's see strangers around the house.
Tick..
tock..
tick..
tock..
Seconds passed by when that one howl was joined by another.
And another.
Until all the dogs in the neighbourhood are all howling, some I'm not even familiar with. It got louder and louder on the same pace as the tick of my alarm clock. The horrific sound seemed to enter the house. I can hear it just outside my room. I sat up and went to the farthest corner of the bed against the wall and covered my ears. But even so, I can still clearly hear the howls inside my head. I closed m eyes and buried my face and my knees.
Tick
Tock
tick
tOck
The howling was ceased. Then I heard a single, different howl. Old belief say that it is the kind of howl you hear when someone's about to die.
"Mama...." I sobbed. The single howl continued. "Mama..."
My mom died a few days ago. I suddenly remembered she always says that she will always be present on my birthday.
It's my birthday today.
The enigmatic howling stopped. I slowly oped my eyes.
My mother is there, standing on the bedside, with the exact image when she got hit by a truck.
