Scarlett gulped and sat down across from The Boss, she could hear her heart thudding in her ears. She schooled her features to not show weakness—something she had learned to do after she realized crying to her mom wasn’t going to get her anywhere.
The Boss sat scrutinizing her wondering when she was going to show any sign of nervousness. Usually the subjects that he speaks to privately sweat or cry or twitch. He’d never seen anyone—besides himself—with a face so devoid of emotion.
Scarlett was feeling beyond uncomfortable at his gaze, but she had a feeling that acting as if nothing was wrong was going to get her further in the long run. Eventually, the man before her decided to speak, “Scarlett…” She had to suppress a shudder at the way her name sounded on his tongue. She had the overwhelming urge to lose her breakfast—yet her face still remained emotionless.
“Yes?”
He sighed, “This place really is a good place, and we aren’t going to hurt you.”
Scarlett scoffed, “I’m sorry, do you want me on my knees thanking you profusely for kidnapping me and injecting me with some mystery liquid that gave me superpowers?” Scarlett’s voice dripped a mixture of venom and sarcasm.
The Boss let out a long-suffering sigh. “I’m serious here, there’s a reason you and the others were picked,” he paused.
Scarlett looked him in the eye, waiting for him to continue, it seemed as if he wasn’t going to elaborate. Finally, she asked, “Well?”
“Well what?”
Scarlett had to stomp down her impatience, “Are you going to tell me why we were picked?”
The Boss contemplated. “None of you had people who would miss you. It’s easier to get away with using you if nobody’s looking into your disappearance.”
Scarlett felt her heart plummet. It was true; there was no hope of ever getting out of this place. The Boss felt pleasure in being the one to put the flare of panic in her eyes.
“So, why have somebody we each know here?” If she’s going to have to spend time in this man’s presence then she might as well get some answers.
“If you have something from your last life then you are less compelled to try and escape this compound,” he answered patiently.
“You really have this worked out,” Scarlett observed. “How long have you been doing this for?”
“Twenty-eight years.”
“Why am I here and not with everybody else.” His dead gray eyes had that creepy look in them again.
“You got the strongest power,” he said as if that would explain everything.
“And?”
“I’m personally overseeing your training to make sure you will reach your full potential in time to put you into battle.” The Boss smirked when he saw Scarlett’s throat move from gulping.
“What is this oh so magnificent power?” Scarlett once again doused her words in sarcasm.
He hadn’t been so amused in a while; normally the people in his company are too terrified to mock him. He hoped this one wouldn’t die as quickly. “You will be able to control the elements.”
She blinked at him, “What do you mean?”
“I mean exactly what I said,” he started, feeling exasperated. “Water, fire, wind, whatever,” he flapped his gross hand in the air, “you’ll be able to control it.”
Scarlett contemplated the new information, she would practically be invincible. She would be able to escape this place! If her Jocelyn, Adam, and Kasper were so powerful than the people here surely couldn’t keep them. Her mind began to wander with possible escape scenarios.
The Boss’s voice cut her out of her thoughts, “Of course that means you’ll die the quickest.” Scarlett was sure that if she was chewing on something than she would have choked, just the way he spoke nonchalantly made her disgusted. He acted like their lives meant nothing. But to him, I guess they don’t, she thought.
“What do you mean,” she struggled internally to keep her calm façade.
“Because your power is stronger it will eat up your life force all the sooner,” once again he flicked his gnarled hand dismissively. “We’re done here, get out.”
Scarlett parted with, “You won’t get away with this.”
She heard his humorless chuckle all the way down the hall.

I'm sure you all hate me and I don't blame you, I'm the worst updater ever. This is actually the furthest I've ever gotten on a story so you should feel privileged (just kidding). I wish I could just sit at home and write all day, but sadly I have responsibilities like school *groans*
I hope you like this story, if anybody is actually reading this story, I only have like 50 views all together. I don't get how some people get hundreds of thousands of views, if there's some secret will somebody let me in on it.... okay sorry about my long authors note. I love anybody who actually reads my stories
